Ipod : An overrated POS

Does anyone else agree with me that stupid Apple IPODs are SO overrated. The media makes it sound like Apple invented the mp3 player. They get down on their knees and suck Steve Jobs' jimmy like the little bitches they are. The IPOD is an OK player, but its battery sucks and is not user replaceable. Also, it is overpriced compared to comparable units. I like the Creative Muvo2 better.

Also, if you jog with the IPOD, you damage the hard drive and then it is broken. I'd rather have an mp3 player with true flash memory, so no skipping and no worry about skipping. The IPOD is Ok, but it deserves nowhere near the attention that it receives from the mainstream media.

Bite your tongue, young man! Thou shalt not speaketh ill of Jobs! wink

There is always a better way to build a mousetrap, or an MP3 player, for that matter. There are problems with the system, to be sure -- it costs a grip, it's got a weak battery, it's not suited for exercise -- but at the same time, it has an incredible amount of memory, it is easy to use, the iTunes software is miles ahead of MusicMatch or WinMedia, and it is light. It is the best gizmo I have ever owned.

Someone can build a better one, but hey, I dig the gadget tremendously.

So do you have one or are you going with what you've read?

I run with it and I have no problems. A friend of mine has the first one he bought 3 years ago and has yet to have any battery issues.

I agree with your comments on the hype and it's taken me 3 years to finally buy one but I wouldn't want anything else. Not to mention the accessories (that most mp3 players don't have) like the "itrip" which broadcast an FM signal to my car radio.

Steve Jobs is a genius and an amazing man, but that doesn't justify all the IPOD hype. It is just the media distorting the truth to make a more colorful story.

The IPOD is cool, but so are the comparable players by Dell, Creative, and others. I'm sure people love their IPODs...I love my little Creative Movo2 that I modified to hold 512MB of flash memory. But it just makes me sick how the public is composed of sheep who buy the IPOD just because they hear it is good, and they don't even compare it to the other models out there. And the media pretends that there are no other portable mp3 players out there, and there never were, even though they've been around for years.

Oh well, I know I'm just being crotchety and irritable, but you can see where I'm coming form.

I don't think the IPODs have been out for 3 years. I could be wrong on this, but I seriously doubt it.

As far as running with it, hopefully you won't have a problem because it has a RAM cache that limits HD access time. But if you happen to jar or bump it when it is running the HD, you may be stuck with an expensive paperweight really quickly.

Well, we agree on the hype aspect of it which was my main point.

The first Ipod was introduced in October of 2001 so you were right.
It was 5 gig and cost $399.

Not really. I've owned Creative and Rio MP3 players and the iPod is definitely the best. They replace your batteries now (for free, if you buy it with a 3-year warranty, which is great). I run with it and have never had it skip...it has one of the less fragile HD's of any of the HD players.

I've had half a dozen players over the years, and the Ipod is completely over rated. Worst still, its being sold as a "lifestyle" player, rather than sticking to what Mac did best, which was to innovate.

The Archos player craps on the Ipod. 40 gig min, all formats AND you can watch movies on it. two.

As for the battery thing, don't gt me started....Jobs,...hang your head in shame. Mac is dying. The Ipod is the last throw of the dice. Its big in the US, but outside...

OK I really want to know what exactly is the problem with Ipod's battery because I don't own one (yet)?

I'm quite happy with my Sony MiniDisc (with NetMD) and it takes a AAA battery.

Apparently the IPOD battery is sealed in the unit, so the consumer can't access it and replace it if it goes bad. Also, I don't think it is rated to last that long before it fails..I'm not sure of the details, but I just don't like how you can't change it. I'd rather have a player that uses regular batteries. The muvo2 has a special battery which kind of sucks, but it does hold a charge for a long time and at least I could buy another battery off of ebay someday if it fails.
