STEVIE: which 12 songs... If you were gonna turn somebody on to STEVIE WONDER , what 12 songs would you choose? Or do you think there's one album that would do it ? (say, to convince someone who's image of Stevie is " I Just Called To Say I Love You", that he's the ultimate artist.) I would suggest any of the folowing albums: Music Of My Mind Talking Book Innervisons Fulfillingness Full Finale Songs In The Key Of Life Once they'e hooked, and they will be  , I would suggest Stevie's box set, "At The Close Of A Century" for the best overview of his career until 2000. This set is basically the best greatest hits collection on Stevie's career. Newcomers can really use this set as a startng point for their journey through Wonderland.
A bargain basement intro collection is The Definitive Collection. P.S. Heard some live previews of Stevie's upcoming cd, "A Time To Love". With tunes like " Can't Imagine Love Without You", "True Love" And "Moon Blue", people better get ready for the Wonderman!! These tunes are jazz classics!! | |

Journey Through The Secret Life of Plants album would do it. Take any 12 from there and tell me he's not the greatest songwriter and musician of all time.  | |

I just meant it's almost impossible for me to pick a fave abum ...but if I had to, I most likely would choose "Songs in the key of life", because it was one of the first album I bought and I the first album ever I really worshipped from the first til the last track, every second. IMO, SITKOF is highly overrated. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice album, but it's not Stevie's best piece of creative work. I just never understood what all the hoopla was about.  | |

Where can I hear this!!! I've been waiting for something new from Stevie... One of my favourite Stevie tracks and it's a pretty recent one is "Season's of Love" of RENT the musical soundtrack... see if U can find that. Another rare live cut is: Maybe Baby (try to find the live version jam with Prince) On the track Stevie says, "Prince as much as U may think I have inspired U, U inspire me too" Also... (in no particular order) For Your Love Blame it on the Sun Superwoman Evil Love's In Need Redemption Song (Marley Cover) Place in the Sun Lately Signed,Sealed, Delivered Another Star Superstition.... God, the list goes on... Just get the whole catalogue!!
p.s. okaypimpn SITKOF is far from over-rated bro... Love's In Need (Take 6, Blackstreet), As (Mary J, George Michael), Knocks Me Off My Feet (Donell Jones, Tevin), Past Time Paradise (Gangsta's Paradise) I Wish (Wild Wild West), This is how much influence it has had on our world of music as we see it today!! hmmm... it IS tempting to co-sign this... but I can't really be objective here, because this album for me personally means so much Stevie's SITKOL and and EWF "All'n all" are the records responsible for dragging me into this whole mess if not for them maybe today more than a quarter of a century later I would be pumpin' Marilyn Manson & shit....?

I am demanding that you pull that album out,lock yourself in a room all weekend,and play it over and over and over and over and over.It's so much more than just a "nice album". "And so you wait to see what she'll do....is it sun or rain for you?"

This is very interesting. I guess most people would list SITKOL as their "Masterpiece album". It's certainly his most popular, although I think I would pick Innervisions or Talking Book as my favorites. to me, Songs in the Key of Life is a great album that has some great tunes, but it also has a lot of songs I would skip over, but that seems to be the case with most double (or triple) albums...
It does kinda bother me that when Journey through the Secret Life of Plants was not a hit, Stevie stopped experimenting; While most people (including most critics) panned the album , a number of jazz critics Were singing his praises and lauding him as the next Ellington and expected him to eventually write Suites and Symphonies and more music across the spectrum ... but it seems like the negative reviews really stung him , and since then, he hasn't really ventured outside of mainstream pop/R&B music, dissappeared into Digital technology hybernation...and then it's what, 10 years between albums now? I know it's an artist's perogative to go where he wants to go in music , but I wish he felt the freedom to go back and forth like Prince; in addition to R&B, put out an instrumental, or jazz album or Rock or Classical, and not worry about whether or not the mainstream "gets" it... I've been hearing some good things about this new album,though, so I'll have to wait and see... maybe he's finally coming out of it...maybe... Exactly. I think he really took the sales to heart (especially after coming off the success of SITKOF). There was a website that listed the outtakes and unreleased songs from that period and I can only imagine how they sounded. Probably phenomenal! | |
