From a composition standpoint (as in overall beauty, emotion conveyed, etc.), I have a few favorites. Here's a short list. In most cases, it applies to the guitar playing throughout the song, not just the break(s) for a solo. It's just off the top of me bald, brown head:
1) "Broken Hearts" by Vernon Reid in Living Colour (Muzz Skillings' bass solo was a beaut, too) 2) "The Morning Papers" by Prince 3) "It's Probably Me" by Eric Clapton (with Sting, David Sanborn and Michael Kamen) 4) "Lovestruck" by Jesse Johnson 5) "So Misunderstood" by Jesse Johnson 6) "Just Wanting You" by Jesse Johnson 7) "Mr. Magic" by Eric Gale 8) "Rainy Day" by Robben Ford, from this KILLER tribute Hendrix album, "In From the Storm" 9) "Ten Long Years," BB King & Eric Clapton (especially Eric) 10) "Three O'Clock Blues," BB King & Eric Clapton (especially Eric) 11) "Don't Know Which Way to Go," by Buddy Guy & Eric Clapton from the "Rush" soundtdrack 12) "Red House" by Jimi Hendrix (most versions) 13) "Voodoo Chile" by Jimi 14) "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" by Jimi 15) Heck, most studio and live solos by Jimi. I don't have time to list them bad boys. 16) Most studio and live solos by Stevie Ray Vaughan 17) "Cliffs of Dover" by Eric Johnson 18) "Blue Powder" by Steve Vai 19) "For the Love of God" by Steve Vai 20) "Three Views of a Secret" by Birelli Lagrene 21) "Sweet Home Chicago" (Live) by SRV, EC, Buddy Guy, Jimmy Vaughan and Robert Cray 22) Most of Doyle Bramhall II's studio stuff, though live he's also a beast 23) "Joy in Repetition" (most versions) by Prince 24) "The Ride" (Crystal Ball version) by Prince 25) Most of Earl Klugh's output 26) Most of Stanley Jordan's output 27) "The War" by Prince 28) "Beautiful Strange" (Electric version) by Prince 29) Most of Tuck Andress' output 30) "Booker" by Harry Connick Jr. (No, it's not so great, but he tries and comes off fairly well...)

Good grease, there's an awful lot of great tunes on here.
I'm amateur when it comes to playing the guitar, and so i can't talk about composition. All i can say is that i absolutely adore Jimi Hendrix's work on Come On (Let the Good Times Roll).

youngca youngca, You have a knack for taking me back into the past. Mickey Baker's "How to play Hot Guitar" Books 1&2, were the 1st method books I learned chords from. There you go again. Now i've got to come up some of my favorites solos. Back down memory lane. Do you have any Johnny Smith albums? sinisterpentatonic said: I was waiting for you to show up!! Whaddup Sin , Avoided this thread like the plague for days because there's just way too many great guitar solos out there. Finally I decided just to list a few that I liked because they were generally in the context of good tune and not just a platform for a solo. The Star Spangled Banner and Holdsworth...well...they're just straight up freakish. Thanks for Columboing your other thread. The Kurt Cobain line was a hoot. Likewise. Satch and Vai are definite technical monsters. The McLaughlin/Santana and Zappa were real good pulls Tribal Disorder "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."
