I wonder what he's up to these days. I always thought of his voice as the male version of Chaka Khan. He's got an amazing range and some really soulful songs.

Ndeed! Rashaan's bad! In a recent interview , he said he had a lot new material , but it's been sitting in the vaults for the past few years because of the usual record Company BS...

nope. Keep in mind, the 1st (secular) concert i've ever been to was in 1996 here at the Roxy (the Roots). I have both of his albums. I enjoyed RP, but LIS had to grow on me. I appreciated it b/c it was his stuff, but if i weren't a fan already, i would'a demanded my $$$ back. His 1st album spoiled me and i guess i caught a case of the "sophomore effort blues". I have since gone back and made myself listen to it again, so u can't say i didn't try...

Back to the subject, I thought LIS was a great progression to his debut; although, I have yet to listen to ALL of the tracks from both albums. His production is great on a lot of them(esp. the ones Van Hunt and Kenneth Crouch produced), but the others didn't really do anything for me either. His voice is what draws me to his music more than anything. Homeboy's got some serious range to him. I'd like to hear him cover one of Chaka's songs.

hey I just got that Love In Stereo album - it's really good! A couple tracks has Van Hunt playing all the instruments.

I saw KF, JPKee, YA, HW, DMcK, Rich Sm, Rickie Grundy, etc. They all came to my church when I was coming up and my dad used to play for the Crouch's (when my mom'd let him) so I was around them all of the time. My godmother was the gospel concert promoter for our area, so we got all of the major names between 1970-1996. (I left home in '96 to come to ATL, so I can't report much on the concert-scene after that.)

anyways, now you're gonna make me go home and get my liner notes. LOL.

Rahsaan Patterson returns in 2004 with a new album After Hours for release in the UK and Europe by Dome on April 26. The Los Angeles-based singer co-wrote all but one of the songs on the 11-track album which also includes a hidden bonus track. Four of the songs are co-written and co-produced by Rahsaan with Van Hunt, who has recently released his own solo album on Capitol. Other co-producers on the project include Steve Silk Hurley and Jamey Jaz. Ahead of the album release Dome plans a 12" release coupling The One For Me and Separate and a UK visit by Rahsaan and his band is being finalised. New York-born Rahsaan named after saxophonist Rahsaan Roland Kirk wrote hits for the likes of Tevin Campbell Brandy and Jody Watley before releasing the first of his two MCA solo albums in 1997

Ya know what? I've neva understood this Chaka connection in his reviews. Chakaholiks always ramble about that too. I know that he worked with her as a session vocliast briefly but frankly I don't hear her in his voice, I hear Stevie Wonder tho(typicaly).

Tccd, perhaps you should give me a list of songs from him where you could hear a Chaka influence.

Rahsaan and D'Wayne Wiggins (you know Raphael's big bro.) wrote a song for Jody Watley on the Dr. Doolittle soundtrack that borrows elements from "Pack'd My Bags." You know the intro of that song when Chaka sings the "ooooohs" , Rahsaan is singing that same line on their version and I swear it sounds exactly like her (the only difference being that it's in a tenor voice).

Also, his vibrato and tone resembles a lot of Chaka's. There's this one song on his last major release, Love In Stereo, entitled "It's Alright" where the whole song has a CK vibe all over it. At the end he starts to wail and run like he was cracked over the head with a bottle of Chaka! Or better yet, she cracked it up against his head!

I remember feeling excited when the "Love Stereo" came out and I always thought that he & Tevin came out from the same womb(musically that is ) but he's edgier of course which explains why he doesn't get that much of eknowledgment.

Of course, yo boy Van Hunt contributed so much in that Love Stereo gem which explains its whole "feel-good" vibe

Just wanted to add...
His new album showed up on the net a few months ago under the title "The Best". I'll say it right now, every song is TIGHT! I've been a fan since the 1st album, and this one continues in the same fashion. Rahsaan picks the right songs everytime. On the song so hot he freaks the vocals.
