WOW! There are some really good songs on this list. I'm glad to see someone put some Herbie Hancock on here....OLD Herbie at that. I'm not even going to attempt to name anyone..there are WAAAY too many to name. Well...maybe just a couple. Don't forget Curtis Mayfield...and while you're at it...throw in anything from Miles Davis' Bitches Brew album and everything from James Brown was funky. IS FUNK IT'S OWN?
A lot of these songs are crossover - either into disco, RnB, rock, pop... which begs the question - is there REALLY such a thing as FUNK, or is it merely a prefix to other music styles? Me, personally, I'm a huge fan of the funk-disco stuff - Bar Kays, Foxy, Cameo, etc, but there are those who'd shiver at that short list, swearing that P-Funk, Bootsy and Mandrill are the sole source of pure funk. This is all research for a new issue of funkmusician.com, which is why I ask. My favorite funk song of all time, tho, is and will always be FLASHLIGHT. That is everything I'll ever need in a funk song. A hook, a breakdown, loud as hell handclaps, a killer fake ending (on the 12 inch version), a second, and third, and 4th hook within the song. Well. Otan,you make a very good point.In the late 70s and early 80s,it sometimes became hard to categorize many of these songs.But like you,I tend to favor alot of the funk/disco stuff too...the stuff that REAL funk purists would criticize.That's one of the reasons why I love Jamiroquai so much,they proudly wear their funk/disco/R&B stripes,carrying on in the tradition of bands like Skyy,GQ, and The Dazz Band.
