Do We Have Art Blakey fans on the org?

Art Blakey was a phenomenal drummer and bandleader. Arguably one of the greatest drummers and talent evaluators that ever walked the earth. I'm wondering if we have any other Blakey fans on the org.

Blakey, more than most, was an ambassador for the art form and actively cultivated the careers of generations of promising musicians.

As a leader, he put together some great LPs, including "Moanin'" and "A Jazz Message." As a sideman, he made unforgettable music with legends such as Horace Silver and Thelonious Monk.

"Along Came Betty" is one of the most seductive songs of all time. I also love "Summertime" and "Sunday" from "A Jazz Message."

"Indestructible" is also an incredible LP.

I only have a few of his LPs, but I hear him everywhere. I hope to get more stuff.

Good call on the post! Thanks for reminding me I have more money to give Blue Note!

thumbs up!

Blakey was good to so many people and brought them through his band to become bandleaders in their own right. Brandford Marsalis said it was Blakey who encouraged him to play off mic and not be afraid of it. One of the greats, and sadly missed, a great drummer and a real father figure to so many.

I echo everyone's sentiments.
Just listing some cats that have gone the Art Blakey Conservatory of Music.

Buddy DeFranco
Horace Silver
Lou Donaldson
Clifford Brown
Hank Mobley
Jackie McLean
Wayne Shorter
Freddie Hubbard
Lee Morgan
Cedar Walton
Chuck Mangione
Keith Jarrett
Wallace Rooney
Terence Blanchard
McCoy Tyner
Joe Henderson
Randy Brecker
Woody Shaw
Wynton & Branford Marsalis
Stanley Clarke
Kevin Eubanks
Donald Byrd

Wynton has become the face the public (some of them anyway) recognize as the modern day ambassador for Jazz. However in terms of a "training ground" ambassador for the up and coming musician, Art was indeed the man.
