The real Rock/Funk Guitar Hero If there was any doubt who has this title, Prince laid it to rest at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Some strong contenders (living ones) include:
Jesse Johnson Dez Dickerson Micki Free Ernie Isley Lenny Kravitz Drac (from Slave) Vernon Reid (from iving Colour) Spacy T (from Fishbone) add others as you see fit. Remember, Rock AND Funk guitar; not just one or the other.

Oh yeah baby! All hail P-Funk. It's a damn shame that Eddie Hazel was unable to record more music. But what he did record is mighty awesome. I guess Prince is a good example of what you can accomplish if you stay straight. Say no to drugs kids.

I was going with living players but Eddie Hazel would qualify. I dont know about every guitarist from P funk but Eddie is definitely right after Hendrix for dead hereos

I haven't heard a lot of Lenny's stuff(particularly live) but I agree. I think he is more famous for being a black guitar player rather than a great guitar player.

I love Sugafoot from the Ohio Players. He may be more funk than rock, but he's probably one of the best rythm players of all-time. JERKIN' EVERYTHING IN SIGHT!!!!!

People will start to notice a trend with me, but I've got two picks.

Obviously, I'm a big ol' Prince-head, and I'm risking a "rose by any other name" discussion here...
But, take a listen to Jesse Johnson's "Bare My Naked Soul," and get back to me about him playing runner-up to Prince.

Favorite "BMNS" moment: Opening bars of Monika, after the riff plays for a few moments, Jesse whispers, "Good gawwwd." It's so COLD!!! Speaking of guitar greats---I saw Eddie Hazel with P-Funk in 92' and he was brilliant. I didn't know he was that badd. They stood him on his head as he played Maggot Brain and he ripped it.
I mean I knew he was great, but he scorched.
