Why do I think he probably said something sort of similar when V6 came out? Hence the Mary J. Girls.

I just fininished answering on the topic Alicia Keys paid mad respect for Prince at RRHOF and since I was comment about Alicia I thought I'd bring this up.
Some of you probably had seen it before, but by accident I came across a topic on Yahoo that said "Rick James is not happy with today's music" and I clicked on it to read it because I agree with him on that but what I didn't agree with was the comment he made about Alicia Keys (this was said after she won 5 grammies in 02). Rick says: I know a 13 year old girl in Buffalo, NY who could take Alicia Keys chew her up and spit her out like a suppository".
At first I was like what's his problem with her, even though Rick has been a hater in the past. But then I thought about something, I wonder if he is saying this because Alicia was influenced by and admires Prince. She even wore his face on her top at the 2002 BET awards, plus she remade "How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore". I wonder if Rick would've said that if she was raving about him instead of Prince and covered of his songs like Superfreak or something. Remember Rick couldn't stand P and always had something negative to say about him back in the day or maybe Alicia snubbed Rick at a function someplace and hurt his ego. I don't know. You tell me?

My question is, how does he know a 13 year old girl in Buffalo, NY?

As much as I think Mr. James should hurry up and get a life, there are much more talented people in the industry than Ms. Keys who will never get there just due.

Probably like this 13 year old he was talking about. I think Alicia Keys is talented but her music is lacking for me. I think if she was produced different and ventured off from the R&B standards they have her doin, I think her talent would shine alot harder. Cuz it is there.

It's amazing how much real talent is out there that is passed on by for the shit that sells, which nowadays is the equivalent of shit on a stick. The show VH1 Divas had some downright ruthless women singers. Some of the voices practically gave me cardiac arrest they were so good. It should be a no brainer that those chicks should have recording contracts instead they have to compete on a psuedo pop idol show to even get noticed.... Sad.

I think Alicia is a little overrated. She does have some nice songs and she can obviously play, but as a songwriter I don't think she is there yet. And the five grammies was a bit much, in my opinion. But I do think that there are other people who Rick James could be dissing. Why doesn't he get this 13 year old a record deal? He must have some contacts.

I honestly believe Alicia wouldn't be as bad (IMO) if she could actually sing and her production wasn't so weak. confused

Come on, her voice ain't bad (when she uses it). WEAK production on the first album, better on the second but still lacking in spots. I've actually had a change of heart about her - thought she was WAY over hyped when she first dropped (which she was) but after seeing her sing live a few times (on tv) & hearing the second album I'm glad there's someone out there w/ a cool voice, some musical skill & not singing about bootylicious as she shakes her ass. She's slowly but surely earning my respect. As soon as she stops fuckin up songs I love (HCUDCMA?, Never Felt This Way, A House Is Not a Home) we'll be cool lol
heart prince I never met you, but I LOVE you & I will forever!! Thank you for being YOU - my little Princey, the best to EVER do it prince heart

Well, see...that's the problem. She's already fucked up too many!!! lol

I hear where you're coming from, but the girl still can't sing worth a shit to me. She sounds like a mute person trying to hold a note. confused The only song I like by her is "You Don't Know My Name" and that's mainly because she didn't produce it. Nice ol' school vibe to it (although it should considering it's a sample), but nonetheless, I'll give her props on actually playing an instrument which is more than what half these artists out today can put on their resume. thumbs up!
