Rick James bashes Alicia Keys in BET.COM archives. I just fininished answering on the topic Alicia Keys paid mad respect for Prince at RRHOF and since I was comment about Alicia I thought I'd bring this up.
Some of you probably had seen it before, but by accident I came across a topic on Yahoo that said "Rick James is not happy with today's music" and I clicked on it to read it because I agree with him on that but what I didn't agree with was the comment he made about Alicia Keys (this was said after she won 5 grammies in 02). Rick says: I know a 13 year old girl in Buffalo, NY who could take Alicia Keys chew her up and spit her out like a suppository". At first I was like what's his problem with her, even though Rick has been a hater in the past. But then I thought about something, I wonder if he is saying this because Alicia was influenced by and admires Prince. She even wore his face on her top at the 2002 BET awards, plus she remade "How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore". I wonder if Rick would've said that if she was raving about him instead of Prince and covered of his songs like Superfreak or something. Remember Rick couldn't stand P and always had something negative to say about him back in the day or maybe Alicia snubbed Rick at a function someplace and hurt his ego. I don't know. You tell me? | |

Rick has been doing that for years, and even as recent as last year in interviews. According to PFunkjazz Rick had been bashing PFunk too. James comes off as extremely insecure about his place in music and/or its history, he bashes a lot of folks for no apparent reason, yet the recipients of his vitriol don't seem to lash back publicly. Man, Rick got pissed as soon as Prince came on the scene, because he was so much better at EVERYTHING than Mr. James. He just can't stand it that he was never as innovative or talented that Prince or P-Funk. Add in the fact that a "little girl" like Alecia is so much more talented than Rick ever thought about being, and its just truly sad.

Because clearly, along with Little Richard's androgynous look, Prince's fashion sense was much closer to Hendrix's than Rick's. And their (Rick's and Prince's) music NEVER sounded similar. I remember the first time I saw that damn Ebony Eyes video I swore it was Donna Summer in the video with Smokey until the vocals kicked int. | |

Rick James needs to get off it. Alicia Keyes sets an example for some of today's pop stars, even if some consider her not to be one of 'the best'. I'd say she's way better than some who've been around for a long time with a lot less vocal talent. And besides, her new album is among my favorites, and I'm comparing it to the first, which I wasn't so impressed with, and I'm defending the girl because I'm really lovin' her new album and appreciate her talents. I really liked alot of you guys comments. I think he is bitter too, he looks like shit now that he is older. I believe that Rick had some kickin songs, but I figure if you got talent why hate on somebody else? I guess that is part of some folks package sometimes. About Alicia Keys, I like Alicia and I don't think she has the best voice, but I think it has potential and it could get better. I guess I really can't say nothin because I feel the same way about Brandy, Ashanti, and some of these other female artist and I didn't care for Beyonce, but I have gained a certain respect for her since she appeared with P at the Grammy's. If you don't think Alicia Keys is all that, then you just don't gotta respect that? But I still say I bet Rick would be singing a different tune if Alicia was sweatin him instead of Prince and for those of you who said something about the 13 year old girl. My co-workers said the same similar thing. What's he doing with a 13 year old girl in Buffalo? Who does think he is R. Kelly?  | |
