can we get married Calhoun..? really, can we..?
i was gonna start a thread about this song this morning... crazy... well, i woke up this morning and i put "go for your guns" on the turntable, and i noticed something... there is really no good place on an isley album or cd for "voyage to atlantis"... there just isn't... cause if it isn't the first song, then you sit through every other song waiting for "voyage" and you don't enjoy them as much, because of the anticipation... you're almost tempted to skip the other songs, if they didn't kick so much ass also... but the downside is, if you put it at the beginning, then you either just wanna repeat that track and play it over and over again and never make it to the rest of the album, or the rest of the album just seems anti-climactic, cause you've already heard the bomb-diggity... that song is my shit, though... when it starts with that little guitar feedback that sounds like it's being fed through an organ amp or something... and then ernie starts tearing it up, while marvin's laying down that sweet, smooth ass funky bassline... and then ronnie comes in... smooth ass ronnie muthaf'kin isley with that miracle ass falsetto... "can i go on my way without you"... that voice is a heaven sent, and smooth as can be... i'm straight as arrow, but sometimes ronnie got me checking myself with he start singing "set sail with me"... ... when Mrs. Dee and i went on our honeymoon to the bahamas, we went to atlantis... and the entire time i was there, i kept singing this song over and over with my weak ass falsetto... i'm surprised somebody didn't kick my ass out.... anyway... no way that i could narrow down to my 5 fave isley songs... no way in hell... i might be able to cut it down to 15 or so... but that's cutting it... this is my 2nd fave group of all time, behind the stones... so, you gonna marry me calhoun..? ... This Old Heart of Mine Shout Twist and Shout It's Your Thing Fight the Power Climbin' Up The Ladder CalhounSq, thanks for bring this up. Got some very fond memories surrounding this song. I used to play this tune in a cover band. The tune was the only song sung by our bass player. There was a point in the tune that breaks down to just the vocals. Our bass player hated this part of the song because everybody else in the band would make bets as to who could make him laugh during this section. Sad to say...I won a lot Aah the good old days. "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all." | |
