N*E*R*D* - Fly or Die

Anyone else cop this yet? If you haven't you need to (although I don't think it drops until tomorrow). Snatched it up from the local mom'n'pop- and i must say, it is the JAM. anyone expecting "in search of" pt. 2 is gonna be disappointed. musically, it's drastically different. very late 70's, santana meets steely dan meets the roots kinda stuff. completely awesome though. lyrically- a bit more strange- a lot of conflict between a child and his parents (at least with the first couple tracks). keep your eyes open for the hidden tracks- even they are pretty rad.

stand-out tracks:
"don't worry about it"- pharrell doing his best prince vocal imitation. bits and pieces smack of prince influence, especially, pharrell's vox and the guitar.

"jump"- synthy- almost new-waveish. has the two guys from good charlotte singing on it, but even they can't ruin the song.

"breakout"- starts out slow and kinda folky, until the drums kick up, with shay telling everyone the ages old adage "hey, shit happens."

bonus track #1- pretty acoustic ballad with the fantastic line "i was waiting for you, mom, i was waiting for you..."

"drill sergeant"- stomping track, very pseudo-beatles psychedelia.

"maybe"- the best song on the album. a gorgeous, piano driven retro ballad about love found, lost, and then found again. the harmonies alone are fucking fantastic.
now i know what this is all about. now i know exactly what i am.

it seems that people get Credibility off of old shit these days.....public goes on and on about how much people like britney,christina,justin,etc...are just plastic pop music.but someone bite's some old sounds,...and its like they're the greatest thing ever.

that said...i love the n.e.r.d stuff....so i shall be picking this up. smile

I love their sound, it's so unusual, so I'm gonna try to pick it up also.

Peace

the song is kinda prince-like. i would go so far as to say it smacks of prince influence but it's definitely there in a diluted form.

bits and pieces, purpleone, bits and pieces. to me, pharrell's vox sound like a "gett off"-era prince impression. if you don't agree, thats fine. i'm just sayin'.

I like this song, too, but I don't really hear Prince in it. hmmm I think it's more in the vibe of Curtis (at least the singing is).

Look yall, I bought the CCD early b4 I went 2 work. I listend 2 it while on my headphones also so I got every song in tune. I have to say I was greatly dissapointed. Other than nice tracks like "The Way She Dances" "Drill Sargent" and "Dont Worry About It" and "She Wants 2 Move" the album doesnt hold as greatly as it did on "In Search Of" (re-worked version).

It's like, y are this grown 30 year old man talkin about runnin away from home still? That's my boy and all, but come on man, what happened 2 the funy weirdness?

2 bad I lost my copy of "In Search Of" because now i find myself longing for it again.

I'd give it a 6 out of 10.

I too like Don't Worry About It along with Wonderful Place (which has that extended part about the 4 year old falling into the water - "I was waitin' for you Mom, I was waiting for you") and The Way She Dances.

maybe the shirt always being off is disturbing me, i dont know.

I listened 2 it again last night, i still feel the same way. It's aiight, but it's not no masterpiece of art or nothing. It's standard alternative / indie rock. Maybe that's y. I dont really get in2 that much.

I mean tracks like "Run 2 The Sun" "Tape U" "Brain" "Bobby James" were fun, imaginative, new and exciting. While other than the tracks i liked.. is kinda like...ur average garage band....

i don't mind it if pharrell wants to walk around shirtless. he is a cutie.

i haven't heard fly or die yet but run2 the sun, tape u, and brain are awesome songs. don't worry about it and she wants to move don't seem to be as good. i like them though.

I totally agree. There's some cool stuff, but those songs in the beginning abou beign mad at your dad sound like soemthing written for Michael Jackson. I was waiting for Mcauley Caulkin to rap. Repalce a couple of tracks and this album could have been 100% better. I love these guys, the drums and bass sound so cool and RAW. I cant wait to see them live again next month!

Some of this is a little hokey, but I do like that album overall.I do wish they had added a little more of that humor, though."back set love" seems unfinished.I cannot believe they didn't put a good hook on that.It is distracting in its absence.I do anticipate this album being played alot on college and alternative radio.I feel as if it will be more successful chart-wise thatn the first album.Hopefully, the record company will push the right songs and they make a killer Beatlesesque video for "wonderful place".There are some serious pop chart contenders on there.
