I've never really gotten into the Stones, mostly because I just never bought their music. I know some of their songs, but just never really made any effort to listen to them in all these years. Having said that, I finally listened to "Sticky Fingers" after much prodding from fellow orgers, to see see if my mind could be changed on my opinion about the Rolling Stones.

In summer 2002, I played "Sticky Fingers" at full volume while driving south through the Mississippi delta on US 61 from Memphis to New Orleans. (I was on a family trip with my wife and 2 teenaged kids.)

It was a glorious day in my life.

I think I'm just iffy w/ the Stones. The catalogue is so big you have to like a lot of individual songs, but their albums (of the few I've heard, besides Beggers Banquet) don't stand up. People rave about Some Girls but I only like 3 songs on that one (Miss You, Just My Imagination, Beast of Burden)

Oh yea, & I'd absolutely LOVE to hear P do "Can You Hear Me Knocking?"!!!

but really... "sticky fingers" is the shit... and i'll tell you why... it has the greatest r&r moment of all time on it... it's in "sway"... if y'all got a copy of this shit, take it out and listen to what i'm talking about...

it's after the guitar solo... the first guitar solo... the solo is ending that string section is swelling up and mick taylor is bending his last notes, while keith is chugging along in the background... charlie starts cracking on of those perfect drum rolls that he does so effortlessly... and then mick jagger comes in from the background and starts screaming "heyyyyy, heyyyyy, noooooyooooowwww"... and that's it right there...

it's so powerful, that everytime i hear it, it just floors me... it's like in a james brown song... like "maybe the last time" or "goodbye, my love" or "oh baby, don't you weep"... the scream conveys so much more feeling than even the lyrics of the song, so that it comes to the point where the scream is the most poignant lyric...

"what's your favorite line in this song?" "yaaaahhhhhooooow"... ...

it's crazy though... cause after that's over and mick has hit with the most soulful scream this side of the godfather and otis redding, you have to sit down and remind yourself, that all he really said was "hey hey now"... ... and you almost feel embarrassed and ridiculous that you got so caught up over "hey hey now"... which doesn't really mean shit when you break it down like that, but it means so much when you hear him singing it...

that's my shit right there... and the album is a classic start to finish... "brown sugar"... i mean, that song is the sound of the stones... it's not my favorite stones song, but if someone were to ask me what the stones sound like, that is what i'd play for them... there aren't enough words to describe how powerful "can you hear me knocking" is... it could use a harmonica solo, but that's petty... ... some great soul screaming from jagger in this one, too... "yeaaaaah, i'm gonna take you doooooyooooown"...

"you gotta move"... that's my shit... some good ass old school acoustic blues... "when da lawd gets ready, you gotta move"... yes, oh yes... yo ass gottsta move...

flip that shit over... "bitch"... that bassline..? those rhythm guitars duking it down... can't fuck with that song... the horns... james brown shoulda copped that one... then "i got the blues"... this is another where mick throwns it down like otis, who shoulda copped this one... that organ solo, too... then mick starts losing it at the end... "if you don't believe what i'm saying, at 3 o'clock in the mornin' baby, i'm singing my song for you"...

"sister morphine"... creepy as all hell, right there... "why does the doctor have no face?" ... the minor chords in this one just drive the dark ass lyrics all the way home for me...

now, the only misstep on this album... "dead flowers"... lyrically, this is one of the 10 best songs that jagger and richards ever wrote... "send me dead flowers every morning, send me dead flowers by the mail, say it with dead flowers at my wedding... and i won't forget to put roses on your grave"... that shit is powerful... but the way they perform it is so f'n hokey and corny... they lose it... however, steve earle does a version of this song on "shut up and die like an aviator" that will make you consider suicide on even your happiest day... ... he wrings every bit of pain out of those lyrics... when he sings, "i'll be in my basement room with a needle and a spoon, and another girl to take my pains away" you believe that shit... probably because he's strung out on heroin while he sings it, but still... ...

and this album has the best album closer of any stones album... "moonlight muthaf'kin mile"... this ballad is it... the first stones song i ever learned how to play on guitar... and this is my jam... when the strings kick in on this one... this one tears me up, too... i used to listen to this song back when i was drinking a lot... not a good combo... ...

actually, one more thing... i was so certain that you'd love this album, that i was going to buy a copy of it and ship it over there to your ass... that's about all the gloating i have for today... ... really, i'm just so happy that you dug the album that i don't wanna ruin it by gloating... ... rock on wit ya bad ass self, girl...

I haven't heard that version, but I like the way Charlie speeds up the tempo just a bit at one point in the studio version. He does it (unintentionally) on "Honkey Tonk Woman" too, at the beginning of the second verse.

i read somewhere that keith wrote that song with gram parsons in mind... have you ever heard the flying burrito brothers cut on that track..? their version actually came out a year before the stones version did, but the world wasn't ready for the burrito brothers yet, so it flopped... damn good version, in my opinion... there's a certain pain in parsons' voice that even mick can't conjur up... even though he does sing the living hell out of that song...
