Lookback: Bass/Miami Bass/Booty Music

Remember all those bass/booty songs that used to come out in the early- to mid-90s?

I love bass music. I still do. But, I used to be into way more than nowadays.

Some of my favorites included:
-Dis 'N' Dat "Bumpin'" (remember their song with 69 Boyz called "Party"?)
-69 Boyz - Nineteen Ninety Quad (that used to bump)
-95 South - One Mo' Gen
-Various Artists - ...And Then There Was Bass [Compilation] (this collection is remembered for bass remake of "As We Lay")
-Various Artists - So So Def Bass All Stars Volumes 1, 2 & 3 (I got the first two, those were so hot. I loved the megamixes on the first one, plus INOJ shined with "Love You Down" and "Time After Time." Remember "Wazzup! Wazzup!" Also, Corina was jammin' with "Summertime Summertime" and who could forget the mid-90s classic "My Boo" by Ghost Town DJ's -- I will love that song forever.)
-Various Artists - Rhythm & Quad (remembered mostly for the big hit "Shorty Swing My Way" by K.P. & Envyi and somewhat for "Player Can't You See" by A-Town Players)
-What would any good bass list be without Luke. Everyone remembers "Scarred," "Doo Doo Brown" and "Raise The Roof." Still gets played at parties to this day.
-2 Live Crew (classic group. Still have "As Nasty As They Wanna Be" and I remember "Hootchie Mama" from the Friday SDTK. The jam by them, IMO, was "Coolin'")
-Quad City DJs (partners-in-crime with the 69 Boyz representing the Orlando Quad sound...remembered mainly for "C'mon N Ride It (The Train)"
-DJ Magic Mike (uber-bass DJ)
-Shorty D (don't hate on this cat...been in the bass scene since day one)

All of a sudden this genre just disappeared from the pop music radar around the late 90s and later got usurped by the Crunk/Dirty Southern Rap phenomenon.

Love that stuff...not Lance Bass but bass or booty bass or whatever the kids are calling it but I don't have very much of it. In fact all I have realy is "So So Def Bass All Stars 2" and that kicks my ass! I bought it just for Corina's "Summertime, Summertime" but of course the biggest hit on here is INJO's "Love You Down" (whatever happened to her...wasn't she supposed to release a CD?). Jan, do you have any recommendations? SHould I get Volume one or three next?

OMG Vinny, you have Vol. 2! You're the first person I've seen on the Org with that. Vol. 2 is crazy...I love "Apple Pie," "Summertime Summertime," "So So Def Quad," "Hard Core Wuk," etc. That CD is unfadeable.

I recommend checking out Volume 1. That has the 90s classic "My Boo" by Ghost Town DJs as well as "Body Hop (Oh My Goodness)" by T'Baby and "What'z Up, What'z Up" by LA Sno. The last 3 tracks on that CD are hot as well: "So So Def Bass All-Stars Megamix," "Let It Burn" by Playa Poncho and the "So So Def Bass Test." SO HOT.

Vol. 1 & 2 are definite keepers. Vol. 3 was too commercial and watered down IMO. Too many remakes and the bass wasn't heavy enough. It was like a watered down new jack swing LP. Also, I recommend checking out "...And Then There Was Bass." It has the song "If U Like Pina Coladas!" but the bass on that album is very heavy and you'd shake your a** like a salt shaker. LOL!

Bass memory:

I remember one night back in '96 I called Power 106 4 or 5 times requesting "My Boo" by the Ghost Town DJs. The on-air DJ was like "I'll play it for you. Don't worry." I stayed up until like 4 or 5 AM waiting for them to play my song. When they did, I was happy as a clam. I recorded it with one of those little TDK tapes and was jammin' to it (this is way before file sharing!) LOL! That was fun.
