Truth Hurts Is Back-New Interview!

From another board, I was waiting 4 this to happen. Homegirl got alot of potentials to pull, hope this independent thing doesn't flush her career down(since its not that cozy being independent nowadays unlike back in the day) Enjoy:

Truth Hurts Interview
by Adam Bernard 27.04.04

When last we heard from Truth Hurts she was in a sticky situation involving a sample in her hit single "Addictive." That fiasco is behind her now, as is her association with Aftermath Records. Despite the lawsuits, and sampling controversies Truth says she holds no ill will towards her former label, "I'm just the type of person where I don't have any ill will towards anyone once the gig is up," she explains, "everything has a season and once the season's up you move on. There was never any funk between me and Dre it was more the business."

The business led Truth to Raphael Saadiq's label, Pookie Records. "I ended up landing there through a discussion with Raphael when I was on a second deal search, actually when I met him I was on a search for tracks. He talked about being independent, laid it out, made it sound real lucrative. Sounded like something I'd like to do." After thinking it over she linked back up with Saadiq and signed on with him.

The first thing that became obvious after Truth signed with Pookie Records is that there are a lot of differences between being on a major label and an independent. According to Truth being on an independent label has "helped me mature as an artist because the independent situation is totally different from the major label treatment. It's self contained, you really have to get into your business side."

With her business and musical sides in full gear Truth will be releasing her second album, "Ready Now," this summer and this time around there won't be any sampling controversies because there won't be any sampling. "There wasn't really any sort of sampling except me doing something that Tupac did," notes Truth, "we're not sure if Suge's gonna say yeah or nay." The thing that Truth did that could be traced back to Pac is on the standout track "Ride" where, at one point, she sings "ride a da da da da." She says to expect a lot musically out of "Ready Now" as there is "a lot of live instrumentation on a lot of the tracks, that's Raphael's M.O."

According to Truth, working with Saadiq has helped her music immensely. She says the creation of the album was "a great process, a peaceful process. Occasionally it was pressing, he was pressing me to be me." Pressing Truth to be Truth led to some extremely racy tracks, including the aforementioned "Ride" which features lines such as "you can call me names / make me believe I'm some bitch named Jane," and "I'm on my knees and I'm not about the pray." Truth says of the raciness "I'm grown honey! It is a reflection of a part of my womanhood. I think every woman has a sexy side, if not then UH OH. When I sexually express myself it's to say that there should be some freedom when we sexually express ourselves because we hardly get to do so. We have some of the same feelings but it's hard to express those feelings."

With her sexual side out in full force on quite a few of the tracks on "Ready Now" it seems obvious that her first album "Truthfully Speaking" was influenced by people other than her. "I don't think any album represents an artist 100% the first time," Truth notes, "it's more about the record company with the majors and bringing back the money."

One way she brought back the money was by going on some of the dates on the Up In Smoke Tour to promote "Truthfully Speaking." This led to some funny moments for her, including her young daughter being scared of half the pyro Dre used.

With music going well, Truth is also venturing into acting. She's had roles in The Wash, Ali, and guested on The Parkers. She's also going to start filming a movie this summer called "Marigold" with Ali Larter. Having a music career is life-encompassing enough, but add on a budding acting career and one has to wonder how Truth manages to have time for her daughter. She seems to find a way, though, saying "you have to find a way to get the balance between the two if not it can really be frustrating, for your family and for yourself. I find a way to do it, and that's what makes me superwoman! That's what makes me Truth with a T on my chest."

With her T firmly in place on her chest Truth is readying the release of "Ready Now," which is sure to turn some heads with its strong lyrics and creative live instrumentation. This time around it's all Truth and those that slept the first time around may end up finding a reason to wake up.

I'm not really a fan of hers. I just don't feel her but I'm glad she got away from Aftermath. Dre needs to relax on stealing music the way he has been doing. He just got sued from the dudes from FatBack....i believe for stealing a bass line.

Good luck Truth!!

She has a song called "For Your Precious Love" which is in the Ali soundtrack album, I still hold myself from crying whenever I hear that song.

The woman can really sing, her material are what not making her justice which is the reason why you don't feel her, I think.
