D'Angelo Live from the Jazz Cafe' is good. He's good live...That Voodoo was crap though. You can pick up selections from that live cd on his singles as b-sides. He said he recorded like 75 songs for Voodoo and he picked the best...I'd hate to hear the rest ...He also does a horrible cover version of "She's Always In My Hair" it goes absolutely nowhere. I hear he's in jail right now..."Oh buddy, what a fu**in' waste..." Brown Sugar is classic.

Personally, I loved 'Voodoo' but I now that isn't a popular point of view.
As for 'Live At The Jazz Cafe, London' release, it's pretty good but it is pricey. (There are two versions, one of which has an additional track - not from London, but that tends to add to the price further, and the track is available elsewhere). To be honest, I enjoy hearing his cut of EWF's 'Can't Hide Love' on 'Live' the most - but that's probably because I think it's such a good song. ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

Last I heard he had paid his fine and served his community punishment for the assault charge - chasing after someone, threatening them, resisting arrest, subdued with pepper spray etc.. I believe the matter was settled last year. Has he been up on another charge since? . ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

No, he's in jail on new charges more recently...I do recall that other incident. Yes, "Can't Hide Love" is the best song on "Live At The Jazz Cafe" I agree...

'LIve' is very good, but the versions of the songs stick very close to the originals.
Personnally I agree with langebleu, I liked Voodoo very much too. But a lot of people seem to disagree. how could you resist ' how does it feel' ? Definitely the best song he has released so far. But what has he been doing since? And what are those new charges? it's such a shame..

"Voodoo" was one of the best sleeping pill substitutes I've ever purchased. Don't get me wrong, I reckon it's a very good album indeed - both musically AND as a sedative.

"Hey, those that don't like Voodoo just don't get it" - I think that goes as the typical response to anyone who doesn't like everything Prince does on this site.

Post 'Voodoo', I am only aware of three releases with D'Angelo involvement: 'Be there' with Raphael Saadiq (on Saadiq's 'Instant Vintage') 'Water No Get Enemy' with Femi Kuti, Macy Gray, Roy Hargrove, Nile Rogers, The Soultronics and Positive Force (on the Fela Kuti compilation tribute 'Red Hot and Riot') 'I'll Stay' with Roy Hargrove (on Hargrove's 'The RH Factor') So far I've not managed to find any reference to D'Angelo's current imprsonment referred to by serveitupfrankie. Were any of you able to catch him on the Vodoo tour? It was off the chizain! He funkadelicized alot of them grooves. Extended, eloborated and funk them out! Awesome

The Voodoo album was the shit!!!! The only thing I would've changed about it was ?uestloves boring ass drumming and replaced Pino's classical style of bass playing with more of Raphael's funky style, but other than that I wore the hell outta that CD (even broke my first copy ).

No. R&B singer Michael Archer (aka D'Angelo) was arrested in November 2002 by Virginia cops and charged with assault, disorderly conduct, and other misdemeanors. The charges stemmed from an incident which began when the Grammy winner allegedly cut off a female motorist. According to cops, D'Angelo cursed out and spit on the woman. When police arrived at the 28-year-old crooner's suburban Richmond to serve an arrest warrant, they had to subdue the agitated performer with a blast of pepper spray.

I hear ya! Voodoo was and is a great cd. Very original and fantastic production too. I like it better than Brown Sugar, although I like Brown Sugar a lot too. CB - once again you are correct. Voodoo is great for the bedroom

Anything D'Angelo touches is pretty much on point. He's really the only artist out there that is guaranteed to deliver. Soul. Originality. Live instruments. Great voice. The whole nine.

No - I didn't catch him. I've only managed to hear the circulating recording from part of the concert in Sweden, which I'm pretty sure was from that tour (and your description matches the way the tunes were played). . ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

I respect everyones opinion.. but I see it a little diff.
D'Angelos first album I slept on since I said to myself here is a Marvin and Stevie impersonator with a little hip hop flavor. I later gave in and said hey this is a good album..... Nothing groundbreaking but still better than the other junk out there. Second album got first day and I think I actualy posted here that it was the album of risks and non pop efforts that prince should be doing. I posted under Alexander Nevermind if I remember correctly... ( I became fed up with false promises from Prince and left the board) I dig Raphael but Pino is a top notch musician who emulates James Jamerson so well it has becomes his trademark. Would you say Raph could out groove Jamerson? So Raphel vs pino... no comparison. IMO the basslines are fantastic. Charlie Hunter's guitar is superb..... ?uestlove's drumming is damn good..... I love rim shots and I love how they stretched out and grew as musicians.....Is he Terry Bozzio no but he is a respectable musician who actually knows where music came from to allow him to grow Are the compositions harder to find the melody yes... but does that make the recording bad or is your expectations that bring it down. Hey as far as I am concerned if you want Brown Sugar each time go Purchase " I want U and here my dear" Throw in a little FFF by Stevie and there you go. D'Angelo relised this and took a step out on the ledge... I applaud. As far as a fall our between D and Prince who cares.... D and ?uest are huge fans who like some of us want some more interesting tracks.. sorry rave the album didn't do it for me. cookie cutter artists are boring. I mean I just was listening to Alicia's 1st and second singles from the lates album. Where's the growth... She puts out and album that well to be frank is textbook 70's soul, same as the first album Maybe the album goes deeper but as far as singles..... nothing new or innovative other then the fact that she is a young woman in a predominately man's world and plays an instrument. Bottom line: I will pick an artist like D"angelo even if he canceled both shows I had tix too on the Voodoo tour, or Prince when he took risks, zappa, beck , etc over a formula following mass marketed piece o' crap. . Look @ Prince Purple Rain into ATWIAD... He wanted to alienate people. Music is the best...

Prince, D'Angelo, Zappa & Beck are as mass-marketed as anyone else operating inside the mainstream. I wouldn't call them crap, but...

Raphael could rip Pino to shreds (check him out on D's cover of "She's Always In My Hair" not to mention the bass in "Untitiled") and... ?uestlove's drumming puts me to sleep.
