she's upset w/ the biz. Most def. I could feel the hurt in her voice when she said, "I just know that I'm a person and I don't know when I signed my life away to the expectations of people. I'm an artist..." "I don't want to be a con artist, you know"
She has a book coming out: The Middleman $75.00 well, i guess she won't go broke expressin' herself. [This message was edited Wed Mar 17 13:44:41 2004 by mochalox] "Pedro offers you his protection."

Ah boo-hoo-hoo, poor self-pitying Lauryn - go join a no-milk-we're-tofu-please cult and shut the fuck up! Oh, you did. Good on ya! Now bugger off and go make a decent album next time. She WILL go broke at that rate. I thought £10.00 was a lot to pay for that crappy, semi-delusional, near nonsensical drivel with out of tune guitar backing she belched up last time. She should get over herself. ...Your coochie gonna swell up and fall apart...

i don't think she was showing self pity at all. quite the contrary, actually. it sounded to me as though she was saying she takes responsibility for herself and expects those around her to do the same. i like that she said (paraphrasing here) you want new music and you talk and talk about it but then when you get it you are still not happy with it. good for her! she's never going to go broke with risiduals from fugees stuff and miseducation...she should do whatever she wants. and let's not bash her for answering questions that were asked. i'm quite sure if she walked away without answering she would also get bashed for that.
and i liked the acoustic set.

and i liked the acoustic set. Well defended! ... But you haven't changed my mind. I still think Lauryn is a hugely talented singer who has sadly fast-tracked up her own backside. She's involved in a cult, right?
She reminds me of a mix between Whitney Houston and Angela Davis. I hope she's as happy as she says she is, because she sounds the opposite.

its a shame when you don't know you're nutty.
sometimes the most sane place to be is when you recognize you are losing your mind.

well she did say something to the effect that when she thought of herself the words:depressed, repressed, sad, alone, etc came to mind. (And she repeated depressed like, 8 times.) I'm sure it's lonely when everyone who says they love you, just want you for your hits. They don't want to stick with you through your "episodes." Hmmmmm... sounds familiar
And it was kinda sad at the end when she said that she sucked as a mom. (I'm hopin' Whitney heard that part.) At least Lauryn is trying to be a better mother, so her kids won't be so screwed up. (But then again, most times your kids will end up screwed anyways. I think it's supposed to be that way so psychologists can continue to buy Audi's. ) "Pedro offers you his protection."

I really love Lauryn Hill. Her 'Miseducation...' CD is one of the most powerful albums I bought in the 90s.But I'm quickly losing patience with her. She's taking forever to make a new album.Lately, she's been in the news alot for things that don't have anything to do with music and that's usually the beginning of the end for any artist (just ask Michael Jackson). And then you read all these predictable,self-pitying "Success-ain't-all-it's-cracked-up-to-be" quotes from her.Enough already! Let's stop with all the whiny drama, either release new music or just officially retire. But don't keep fans waiting and waiting.Like George Michael, she seems angry at the music biz and that's totally understandable. We all know that it's a fucked-up business. But unlike many other forgotten artists,at least Lauryn still has a recording contract and the means to release new music. She still has a sizable fanbase. But instead of being grateful, she seems ready to throw it all away and let all these other no-talent bimbos steal the spotlight.
Sorry if this offends anybody. But I just love Lauryn so much and I really think that she is one of the few artists who could actually save R&B.But alas, she doesn't seem interested anymore.

I know that it wasn't ment to be offensive Dave, but shouldn't you get yo life in ORDER b4 you deliever and album? Think about that 4 a sec, brotha! She's NOT an entertainer, she's an artist who has alot of self-respect 4 her effort which is why she's holding bakc till the RIGHT time comes. It seems that people couldn't give a shit about her life, they just want an album(no matta how it costs) and thats VERY unfair IMO and even if she came up with an album like many folks demanded, she wouldn't get praised simply cuz her effort won't be FOCUSED enough becoz of HOW she's busy trying to get her life outta that "whateva" chaos she's messing in. Now, I personaly don't know what is going on with her there4 I wouldn't judge but from what I could tell, she's going through alot of changes and it may take abit of strength to help her over-come it. Plus, she ain't no pretty lookin' cartoon. She has the absloute right to be vocal about whateva she talks about, being a super-star shouldn't make her stop acting/talking like the regular folks on the streets which alot of people are missing. Just my humble 2 cents! [This message was edited Thu Mar 18 8:39:17 2004 by Harlepolis]

and therein lies the problem. for 18 minutes she just talked about THAT mentality. you don't really love lauryn hill. you really love the feeling that a record gave you. if you loved lauryn hill you would not put all of your cares for her on the dependence of her releasing a record. i don't know the girl personally. all i know is that she is a person before she is a performer. if she wants to change her life (and she feels better about herself through her changes and therefore she becomes a happier person) then go right on and change it. as for this whole claim of self pity...listen, she didn't search out those reporters. she didn't announce a press conference wherein she would tell the world her "woes". they came to her and asked questions. she answered them honestly and without shame. i fail to see the self pity that you speak of. She doesn't want to save R & B. I think she's saying that the pressure is too great. I don't blame her. If I see a ship goin' down, I'm not goin down with the ship. If she never makes another cd thats her choice.
Its her life - she didn't hand it over when she signed the recording contract. If she can't handle the fame its her right to shut it down. She owes the fans nothing.

Hey, at least George made an album - and a good one too, not some boring piece of crap where he psychobabbled the whole way through, twanged his out of tune geetar once or twice, and sang the odd note. I think Lauryn is trying to sort out her life the best way she can right now. What was really emblematic of her thoughts at that moment was when she said, "I don't know.. I don't know. There are sometimes when you can't just give an intellectual answer to everything." I feel her on that. Sometimes there are emotions and feelings inside of us that are hard to articulate clearly (or can't be articulated at all) and she was speaking about what she's going through the best way she could.
Society and the music industry were trying to build her up as this second coming, but she was like "hey, I'm just a regular person, I just want to express myself, say something that speaks of my life and for my life, and not lie about or equivocate, and if other people want to listen to it they are more than welcome, but it's not for you." Do it, Lauryn.

Lauryn Hill has some serious, deep set issues. We all have them but her shit borderlines on being crazy and just plain crazy. I don't get her: one minute she's trashing the music industry and the next minute she's charging $500 for an autograph and $75 for a poem? I gave up on her silly ass a long time ago.
The sad thing is she could not handle the success and I think Andre 3000 is headed in the same direction.

Could you imagine being a Sony record exec, trying to get one of your prized artists to finish her new album? I bet she gives them alot of headaches.
