Y do artists make their best albums / songs when depressed?

Prince - Sign O The Times - Black Album - Lovesexy The whole Susannah thing, testing with Acid and stuff...

Sly - There's A Riot Goin On...in his head, got damn.

janet - The Velvet Rope.....need eye say mo?

Michael Jackson - Dangerous .. the alligations were coming on during the making of the album

The Beatles .... from Revolver to Let it Be.

MeShell Ndegeochello. - Cookie. She sounded really mad and still looking for the truths, but the album was awesome.

im glad this subject came up, I was reading the other day an interview with Rick Springfield whos new CD SHOCKDENIALANGERACCEPTANCE is alll about depression and anger, as were his last few CDS, he basically said he cannot write when he is Happy and that there hasnt been one day in his whole life when he has been truly happy the whole day. I think Billy Joel would be another one who fits this mold, his early cds were all about his depressions and relations hoever once he found love and Christie Brinkley he was over.

Prince wasn't depressed when he made his best albums...

Dirty Mind
1999
Around The World In A Day
The Black Album (was just a party album for Sheila E.'s birthday)

I wouldn't call the Beatles depressed during those albums. And actually, although mad and depressed aren't the same things, I don't think Cookie was Meshell's best album. In general it's not a rule of thumb that recording artists make their best music when depressed, but it's not uncommon for certain things to be going on in their lives when they create it. Inspiration has to come from somewhere.

Michael started getting paranoid around the time of the Bad album. Also, the allegations didn't surace until 1993, and Dangerous was released in 1991. I think your timeline's a bit off.

Bob Dylan - Blood on the tracks -one of the most moving and passionate albums ever!
Beck - Sea Change - not for everyone, but very emotional
George Michael - Older - in one word....beautiful!
Lenny Kravitz - Mama Said - can't say he didn't try to win Lisa back.

Roger Waters was the epitome of depression during his career with Pink Floyd, and you could really sense it in his lyrics for all these albums:

- DARK SIDE OF THE MOON
- WISH YOU WERE HERE
- ANIMALS
- THE WALL
- THE FINAL CUT

Actually. I'd throw in:

Me'Shell NdegeOcello -- Bitter. To me, "Cookie" sounded like a Sesame Street record compared to this LP.

Which just happened to be the best album I have heard in ages.

I'm no artist, but here's what I think...

When you aren't depressed, you are busy. You are busy having fun, seeing friends, going places, hanging out, etc. When you are depressed, it's all you can do to shower or get out of bed. Nothing helps sooth boredom and confinement like a pen and paper.

Actually that's not correct. I have read just about every Michael Jackson book. When he was making "Keep The Faith" they said he kept on crying and stopping the take over and over. They said he had to do it at least 15 times because of what was going on. he couldnt get it out of his mind

Like u said they didnt 'surface' around till 1993.

And then.. Keep The Faith is one of the best songs on that album.

Nah, not depressed at all. They were changing as people, and their music is a reflection of that. Your also dealing with individuals in a band, and to say the bands depressed would be bias, since they individually wrote most all the work towards the end of the 60's.

I LOVE THE BEATLES

I heard that they were fighting alot (John and Paul) especially on Let It Be about who made what. And didnt george write "I Me Mine" in anger about John?

I stopped buying Mary's LPs after "Mary." But "My Life" is a fantastic album, arguably the best pf the "hip-hop soul" LPs and one of the better R&B/Soul LPs overall.
