Marvin Gaye Funky!!!

Has anyone heard Marvin Gaye's 11 minute Funk Opus "Got to Give It Up"? This song is a Prince blueprint for his late 80's funky period right down to the chicken grease guitar work. Anyone who is a fan of his 86-88 work(my favorite Prince era) should check out the long version of this song to hear Marvin get down with the funk! cool

Obvioulsy Prince has many influences in his musical life: James Brown, Parliment, Sly and the Family Stone, Jimi Hendrix, Santana, Earth Wind and Fire, Stevie WOnder, Joni Mitchell etc etc. I never realized Marvin Gaye was also on that list untl I heard this version of the song.

great album, great jam!
Vanglorious... this is protected by the red, the black, and the green. With a key... sissy!

And Prince, together with Levi, Sonny, Michael B and Eric recorded a version of the song on 7 July 1993.

The material was planned for the Madhouse '24' release of that era. Nona Gaye, Marvin's daughter, added vocals.

At around the 5 minute mark it turns into a Prince like funk jam. Horns, followed by funky bass and drums, chicken grease guitar, party vocals, Marvin saying HIT ME. I can hear Kiss, Alphabet Street/ Lovesexy, most of Sign O the Times, and definately his live stuff circa 86-88 in that long version of the song.
