Too self-referential. Gets boring after a while. I see the potential for a really talented artist if he keeps growing, though.

He doesn't always refer to himself. He includes his daughter, mom, and ex-wife. To Sir, with Love

So you recognize his talent? I think he has decent stage presence and can come up with a witty lyric every now and then. And he's good with the whole shock value/publicity stunt thing, which always makes for a good pop star. But for the most part, his rapping comes off to me like some drunk frat boy's weblog.

he's got my props, and the new d12 is tight.
But his freestyles lately and unreleased new tunes arent very good, and he aint talkin about nothin 2 special. Straight Jacket Funk Affair

I loathed him earlier on for all his hate-based stuff, but these days I'm like "whatever".
I can see where the appeal is in a lot of his songs, though, but I just can't stand the sound of his voice. A nasal-y whine like that sounds like self-parody. I guess once he's out of the spotlight for good and can't rely on 15 year olds to listen to him, he might start being more creative, or maybe his style will evolve. Usually artists that thrive off of MTV popularity reach a point where they're no longer AS big, and they either fade away, or they evolve/grow artistically. It'll be interesting to see what he does in the next five years.

I'm not a huge fan, but i think Em's pretty good. His flow is pretty original, his voice is distinctive and his lyrics generally have something to say. I like that his stuff isn't all just killing people too. He DOES rap about that someitmes but it's not as big of a crutch with him as it is with other rappers.

I feel the same way as far as the whiny nasly voice thing goes with rappers. Cypress Hill did that to me sometimes!!! It starts to bug. Em on the other hand did that to me at first but over the years his flows and wit has proven itself repeatedly. I always said if you master a freestyle flow you have mastered the art of rapping. No fakin and spittin somethin you wrote, it has to be off the top of your head. He does that quite well! Regardless, I still say 8 MILE is the Purple Rain of hip hiop films. Ooh! Ooh! I don't!!!!
Why dont' I like him? Because he's seriously overrated and the only reason why he's getting the attention he's getting is because he's mastered an African-American art and learned how to capitalize on it.

I was quasi-liking his music when his debut The Slim Shady LP dropped back in 1998 (I believe?), but I lost interest in him after he became a TRL staple with "The Real Slim Shady" in 2000. He was getting all of this hype mainly because of his whiteness (and yes, yes, he knows it) -- while other emcees with comparable or even far superior talent were getting second-tier treatment from the media. Plus, his fans really turned it off for me. He had his moments on Missy's Da Real World with his rap in "Busa Rhyme" and I liked "Without Me," but, I quickly pawned my first (and last) Eminem purchase. Since summer 2000, I haven't been feeling him -- those racial comments that surfaced last year didn't help matters.

I can't believe anyone with a voice like that is even allowed to enter a recording studio.
What were those racial comments like? I think I've missed those, cause I really don't follow the music press that much anymore.

Yeah, and statistics say the majority of mainstream rap listeners are apparently white suburban kids, so do I say it's wrong if a black (or asian, or white) rapper milks that demographic for all it's worth? Don't think so. [This message was edited Wed Mar 24 18:40:43 2004 by VoicesCarry]

I never said that...you did. Let me break it down once again for the slow people on this board... The question was "Who doesn't like Eminem" and I answered "I don't because he's seriously overrated." I also went on to explain why he's so popular. Reading is fundamental. You should try it sometime.

Eminem is a pathetic person...arrogance is his only talent.. Without Dr. Dre he would be nobody..... Wait for 2 maybe 3 more years.... and Eminem is just a bad memory.... the beautiful ones, you always seem to loose
