While driving home from work, a cut from Bad Boy Records group "Da Band" came on. Now like millions of kidz out there, I try to catch this weekly MTV show(mainly to see then fuck up and fight) During the song, the groups only female MC, Babs came in with her verse. So I pondered to myself, "What female MC really honed her skillz as a true MC?" Not saying you have to be a man to be a real MC, but male MC's have dominated the airwaves and the buying dollar from customers in the hip hop realm. Coming up in Philly, I had a good ear to real Hip Hop, you know being 90 miles away from Philly, we got things right after NYC headz heard it. Now, I would say that some women in the game I don't even consider as MC's. Atop of that list is 'lil Kim. Sorry fellas, she may suck some good dick, but she can't spit to me. Mainly because she's not really talking about nothing but sex and gucci. So what. On the flip side, her adversary Foxy Brown is more of a true MC, but her brand name rhymes can get old as well. Now if I speak upon these women, I must take it back as well to the good ole days of simple beats as course storytelling. Back in the days of Roxanne Shantae, Sparky Dee, Us Girls, Sha Rock and other. While the next generation of sistahs were to follow, such as Super Nature who made their mark by trying to dis Doug E. Fresh and his potna Ricky D(SLick Rick), after that tune, Super Nature later became the Salt and Pepper MC's, now comminly known as Salt & Pepa. Still the highest selling female rap group to date. Mc. Lyte and Queen Latifah also bum rushed the male dominated show. MC Lyte's "10% diss" is still one of my favorite joints from the ladies. Latifah had my vote with "Wrath of my Madness" and then her first extended LP "All hail the Queen" Not to mention that she was a true sandwich honey. In the late 80's, we even had a dose of woman power in the London duo, the Cookie Crew and then the brittish invasion of the Queen's protege Monie Love, who also with Latifah was the female members of the crew called Native Tongues with Tribe called Quest, De la Soul, and the Jungle Brothers respectively. Even the west coast had their share of female MC's from the late MC Trouble (RIP) to the studio gangsta B.O.S.S., Death Row's 1st lady, The Lady of Rage and quite possibly the wackest female Rap Group ever in JJ. Fad, although I wouldn't mind tappin' the thick ne of the group. Let's not forget Hammer's installment with Oaktown's 357. Gimme a break. Back in Philly, during the Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince days, we had out own Philly female MC in Ice Cream Tee, nit to be confused with Sweet T from the Heavy D days. So who has the real skillz in push up bra's?? Who do headz consider the best female MC out there? Also another Philly favorote of mine is actually from the same neighborhood where King Juicy grew up. The Nicetown section of North Philly, home to myself and a MC named Ms. Jade from Missy and Timaland's camp. Can't forget maybe Philly's most famous female MC, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes (RIP). Trying to fiqure out who is at the top of the list is even a harder task of arguing on the top male MC. If accolates were the measuring stick, then the crown may have to go to the fugee in a skirt, Lauryn Hill. Who knows. I one thing, the female DJ is a whole 'nother story.
