The Best of Kool & the Gang 1969-1976 Why hasn't this group come up when discussing '70s funk?
One of the first self-contained horn/funk bands of the '70s. This is a collection of their earlier pre-JT (James Taylor) material. If you're looking for raw funky party music from back in the day, check it out. 1. Funky Stuff 2. Who's Gonna Take The Weight, Pts. I & II 3. Rhyme Tyme People 4. Hollywood Swinging 5. Love The Life You Live, Pts. I & II 6. Give It Up 7. Chocolate Buttermilk 8. Jungle Boogie 9. Let The Music Take Your Mind (Extended Version) 10. Open Sesame, Pt. II 11. Kool It (Here Comes The Fuzz) 12. Summer Madness (Live) 13. N.T., Pts. I & II 14. Pneumonia 15. Love & Understanding (Come Together) 16. Spirit Of The Boogie "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

When they crossed over and started selling out 79'- until. it kinda hurt the way they are viewed today. They sold alot of records after 79' but they sounded cheesy and poppy.
1969-1976 They were the Shit!

I've got this comp and the "1979-1987" one, but I don't think I've ever listened to the latter. Don't you think they were funkier before J.T.?

On some of their songs during their early days they sounded eerily like JB's band. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

Spirit Of The Boogie This is one of the BEST 70's FUNK comps around- "Love the Life You Live", "Love & Understanding", and "Spirit of the Boogie" are MONSTER songs!"Jungle Boogie":classic. This cd,along with Ohio Players "Funk on Fire" disc one are highly recommended for long car drives! K&TG gets bashed for dropping the funk after "Celebration", but there's some good tracks on the second volume of this series:"Too Hot", "Ladies Night","Joanna",etc. That's damn good music!

They were the baddest before JT. I disliked their sound when JT joined and the sound changed. Hollywood Swinging in London was one of their fiercest, along with pre 1978 jam. James Brown stated they were one of his favorite bands! Lennytunia

Spirit Of The Boogie This is such a great compilation & it was with this cd I discovered that they had an entire career before James "JT" Taylor years. Another good compilation out there is "Gangthology" . It captures lot's of their lesser known, hard 2 find cuts & it includes the studio version of "Summer madness". Just that alone is worth the price!!! /peace Manki
