The Stone Roses

Ok, I dunno how this will go down, perhaps as this is a fairly British thread, but what is everyones thoughts on the Stone Roses? They pretty much were the first band I ever got into in a real big way when I was younger, and I still love their first album as much as many others. They could've gone on to bigger things if they had stuck together I reckon. Anyone who likes a guitar solo should check out I am the Resurrection. Genius

I heart The Stone Roses.

Their first CD is in my top 5 all-time CDs.

The guitar playing is brilliant, the lyrics so memorable, the mixture of beats often very unique. Just about everything they did in their 1st few years was outstanding. It such a shame that egos and record labels had to mess everything up. I do really enjoy The Second Coming. But I think the moments of brilliance are much more scattered. Still, in between the brilliance is some damn fine music.

Some of my faves include:
What the World is Waiting For
Fools Gold
I Am the Resurrection
Daybreak
10 Storey Love Song
Waterfalls (perfect song for driving on a sunny day!)
This is the One

sigh

I guess I'm happy they split so I can love them forever with 2 nearly perfect albums and a load of b-sides, rather than continuing on and releasing a bunch of crap. It's just too bad they couldn't have stuck with us longer.

I've seen 'em all seperately, but I was too young to see them live sad . She Bangs the Drums is one of my all time favourite songs, and I'd have loved to have seen them play that

d'oh! How could I have forgotten 'She Bangs the Drums"???

Yeah, I never was able to see them live. They barely toured in the U.S., the only chance I would've had was after The Second Coming. I just couldn't get things arranged, and by that point I had read enough poor reviews that I was afraid seeing them may somehow lessen the magic.

I've seen John Squire live, but have yet to see Ian Brown. lol he's played at a Glastonbury I was at, but I skipped him....

Were they popular at all in the U.S.A? U r the first person I heard of from the States who likes em. I always wondered if they had kept their egos in check and delivered an album earlier if Geffen could've broken them in the States

Ian Brown is the man! I've seen him 6 times and only once did his infamous 'drownin cat' voice appear, and that was supporting the Manics (who themselves were pish)

The popularity of the Roses depends on who you ask. The first CD was a HUGE college/alternative/indie album. The alternative station in MPLS played them A LOT and 1st Avenue's all-age Sunday Night Dance Party typically played a few songs by them EVERY weekend for a few years. So, for a generation of us 'alterna-kids' in the US, The Stone Roses were HUGE. They had a lot of momentum in the press that died as the label-war drew on. "Love Spreads" was actually a modest cross-over hit. It came at a time when 'alterna-formats' were huge in US radio. So, a lot more people got into that song that had never heard of the Roses. Unfortunately, that was it for the Roses here.

There was a rumour in the paper the other week that they might get back together, dunno if i'd like that or if it is likely. Ya never know though, Brett and Bernard (of Suede fame) are talking again, so I'm sure Ian and John could bury the hatchet!

Pagey

I was in college when the 1st album came out and they were huge on my campus. I heard those songs everywhere I went for awhile. They were played a lot on alternative stations in the US but not mainstream or top 40 (thank goodness). That said, I think they were one of the best bands of the 90s. I still listen to that album now...it never gets old. Waterfalls, Fools Gold, Resurrection, and Elephant Stone are some of my favorite songs period. I liked Second Coming...but not near as much as the 1st one.
