You know how it is: you wait 5 hours in the blistering heat just to have a good seat and then some reveler comes along 5 minutes after Goerge Clinton gets on stage and stands in front of you!!! I was heated!!!! Our section decided that we would make a united front. Mocha, you are too much, but I feel ya' girl! I'd bus' a mu'fucka in the eye, too, if they came and blocked my vision...especially in ATL heat!!! Oh, hell no!!!!! well any concert in Centennial Park becomes a free-for-all since there's no assigned seating, or seats for that matter. It all comes down to 'who can cast the most threatening stare'. that's where On the Bricks lost me. Plus it was $3 to get in last year. Previously it was free. And it wasn't like there was some major upgrade in service. and yes, it's hot in Atlanta in the middle of June. cooked: "Pedro offers you his protection."

Harlepolis said: okaypimpn said: Yeah, Randy "American Idol" Jackson is his manager. Wendy was playing rhythm guitar on those tracks. Here's a breakdown of his songs and their meanings... http://www.thepros.com/capitol.html Its really cool to hear that Randy is managing the brotha. I really respect Randy's talent, the man is a BEAST on the bass and anyone who could deny that is a brain-dead twit. He did a Jazz gig back in the mid-90's with Lenny White & Patrice Rushen in some Jazz Juke Joint in Harlem and trust me when I say he was smooooocking that sucka to dusts. Won't hurt if I said he's an amazing producer too That's great to hear that Randy is a groovin' bass player. What band was he with? Cuz the pics I saw ... I could only focus on that curl, if you know what I mean (oh yeah I had one too). But if you are correct in saying that he played with Lenny White (oh-oh-oh, etc. ... ah, wish P had played "What is Hip" like he did in Frisco) AND Patrice Rushen, then he's gotta be 'da shiznit. My respect level just rose 10K fold. I didn't know Lenny was into jazz but I do know that Ms. Rushen don't mess around (forget about "Send Me Nots" -- she's BAD). Oh, and Randy Jackson was on the Craig Kilborn show along w/Van Hunt tonight. He's workin' it...and he manages Nikka Costa as well. I know Nikka was trying to Prince on her new CD too. I didn't pay attention. If those 2 artists are any indication, Randy will be a great producer. His confidence is riding high it seems ... cuz everything goes in cycles and his cycle (judging by that curl in the picture) is definitely back. And Godspeed cuz we need some FONK in this world (and not the kind from the non-plain chips).

Nevertheless, he got down and did his thing. Even incorporated EW&F's "Got To Get You Into My Life," Ohio Player's "Sweet Sticky Thing" and the synth hit from Prince's "Head"
Umm. Isn't that the BEATLES "I Got To Get You Into My Life"? or did he do it the way EWF did it? Just nitpicking here... You are NOT nitpicking. Thanks for setting it straight cuz I couldn't remember! And it is important to note which way it was done...particularly if both ways were incorporated. I love artists! (Oh, and either you are a SERIOUS student or you just showed your age. Which is a good thing! Bcuz the reason I know EWF's version wasn't an original is because it was in the remake of Sgt. Pepper Lonely Hearts Club Band starring Peter Frampton (?) and that was...77 or 78?) Rock on. I believe this is part of the Musicology of which Prince speaks.

Like one of his idols, Van Hunt sounds like Smokey...and Prince...and Sly...and Al sometimes. I caught him on Soul Train too. And he was lip synching (cuz that's how that works). Here's something cool (and I'm sorry, I'm going to paste this everywhere cuz not only is Van BAD, but his band is TIGHT at 11AM!) http://www.kcrw.com/cgi-b..._type=show check it out! Van Hunt will be opening for Seal at the House of Blues, L.A. sometime in May. I'll post when I remember!

Music, Politics, and B-ish from the ATL LowDown's resident authority on audio and civic issues, Kinetic Van Hunt: A Little Home Grown For those of you in the know, burning some home grown is typically sketchy at best, and usually not worth it. While it is not clear if Van Hunt is from Atlanta, he has definitely spent some quality time here, having been a part of the EarthSeed/Groovement collective (big shout to Anasa! Do your thing, lady), responsible for the likes of India.Arie, Donnie, Seek and more. This has helped sprinkle a very comfortable and familiar soul vibe throughout his awesome debut Van Hunt on Capitol Records. More likely for Van Hunt, though, the experiences of watching his father and spending time with him as he grew up definitely had a different kind of home grown effect on Van Hunt. He watched how his father lived diametrically opposed extremes in his life, including faking insanity to catch a break from work. His music draws from all of that and provides the viewpoint that life sometimes pushes us toward our vices and that we try to make a beautiful reality out of life, despite that. What makes this album such artistic gumbo is witnessed in the track, “Seconds of Pleasure.” Van Hunt gives you a Bobby Blue Bland sound, mixed with lilting falsetto reminiscent of D’Angelo, Marvin Gaye and Eric Benet (1st Album). “Hold my Hand” sounds like a track you would hear on Res’ first album with retro ‘80’s double beat over soulsonic tracks, but it works very well. “Out of the Sky” is a great spring-time song that changes direction near the end, with some old Stevie Wonder, Original Musiquarium-style musings, with a little bit of Dionne Farris help to boot (Writer’s note: Dionne - music needs you now!). “What Can I Say” actually sounds Beatle-esque, like Paul McCartney came in to do a small reserved set - but it shows the range of Van Hunt’s talent and creativity. This album, co-executive produced by American Idol judge Randy Jackson (really?!) who also produced Nikka Costa (are you kidding me?!) is well worth any money you spend. If you missed Van Hunt perform at Smiths Olde Bar on March 13, 2004, then you need to be in the front of the stage when he performs at Music Midtown on the 99X stage (http://www.musicmidtown.com/bands/index.cfm) April 30-May 2. Van Hunt is some home grown well worth the effort. Yo, mocha, I got my tickets the other day and don't see Van's name on the website (www.musicmidtown) anymore! It's cool though, cause I'm definitley gonna check out Raphael, Cee-Lo and P-Funk!

i luv RS. I bought his live double CD after my daughter's aunt (on her father's side) "held" it, all whilst sayin' she didn't like it, mind u, and I never got it back. Anyways i think i wore it out. My daughter's fave song was Joi's CopyCat, though. BTW, i noticed someone's postin' as me on another site *handsonhips*, but it's kewl. You guys know who i am*neckroll*.
Also, I saw this article on that same site, and since it's relevant, here goes: Review of Van Hunt j. brotherlove on music From the whispers of tastemakers and underground soul fans comes the precise, self-titled debut by singer/songwriter Van Hunt. Van Hunt deftly combines the vinyl appeal of Curtis Mayfield and Sly Stone soul with the spunky affectations of Prince and Lewis Taylor. The 12 tracks on Van Hunt consist of soul-based yearnings and observations, smoldering with muted falsettoes, deep basslines and catchy keyboarding in a gumbo of jazzy R&B and funk, with a dash of psychadelica. It's tempting to compare his release to offerings by Andre 3000 and Raphael Saadiq however, Van Hunt's consistency and musicianship deserves accolades of its own. Evident throughout the songs are traces of his impressive, earlier work with Dionne Farris, Cree Summer, Joi and Rahsaan Patterson. The 28-year-old, Atlanta-based musician wrote, produced and played on all songs on his debut. Van Hunt dedicates his disc "to the pimps, ho's and hustlers for whom I strive to provide background music." And it serves that purpose perfectly. Van Hunt's account of his father's days as a part-time pimp in Dayton, Ohio also captures the overall flow of his debut: "I loved watching him take a lady into the back room, loved seeing the door close behind him, and I loved listening, straining with all my might to hear the strange sounds that followed. Sometimes, after they'd finished, I would sneak into the room and wonder what in the world could have caused such a smell - a heavy bitter mix of sweat and perfume. But, I loved it. I loved sitting in the corner of a smoke filled dope house, tapping my feet to the music while my father and his friends cussed each other out over a game of cards. It seemed to me the beat of the drums urged on their behavior, and drove the alcohol that flowed through their veins out of their bloodshot eyes. Guitars and horns percolated and made their hands tap out the rhythm uncontrollably, '1-2-3-4.'" But Van Hunt is very much in control — at times, perhaps too controlled. In contrast to my criticism of Andre 3000's highly-praised work on the schizophrenic The Love Below, Van Hunt makes an equally frustrating move by not letting loose often enough. Possibly the tradeoff of working with a major record label, Van Hunt takes songs to the verge of genre-splitting explosion yet often regulates the effects to a fade out as if he's unsure of the diversion. Nevertheless, the layers of melodies, keyboard effects, guitar bursts and delicate vocals are undeniably fresh, if sometimes a bit subdued. And perhaps that's the point. Because the disc quickly becomes infectious, begging for the listener to pay closer attention to the underlying passion; much like a young buck trying to hear the cries of passions behind a closed door. Highlights include "Dust", the neo-romantic "Down Here In Hell (With You)", "Precious" (with Wendy Melvoin on rhythm guitar), and "Out Of The Sky"; although, there's not a bad tune in the lot. A must-have for soul-lovers exhausted by radio formulary and definitely one of the best releases of 2004 so far. http://www.thebrotherlove...n_hunt.php sidebar: i'm noticin' how everyone else i noticin' he's too laid back.
