mochalox said: yeah. "Hello Goodbye" is the one I'm talkin' about. Right from the 5 second mark to the 10th second. It's the same as one of P's interludes on the SOTT DVD. (I think P used it as a scene change/interlude. Remember? That's where there's some horns that blast that sound like a train, and then the scene changes to show all of those tacky neon signs.) Oh, okay...ummmm...yeah...kinda.

Yeah, but I definitely hear a lot of Sly. I don't have the retailed released version of the CD-just the promo. Does he actually play all of the instruments on the album (according to the linear notes)?

ok. I have the liner notes. First things first, I'm guessing his birth name is Chris James, b/c CJ is all over the place in the liner notes. All but four songs show that they were recorded by CJ. Apparently he hasn't gotten totally into being ultra possesive and doing everything on his albums himself, because other people did the mixing, drums, rhythm guiter, mellotron, trombone, trumpet, alt. sax, percussion, ten. sax, bass, harmonica, etc. He lists Dionne Farris as doing the background vocals on Out of the Sky. At the bottom it says All other instrumentation: Van Hunt. CJ only mixed one song on this album: Who Will Love Me In December. I think he thanks Jason Orr (FJK founder) but it's listed as Jason O. (who knows?) Of course he thanks Dionne and Randy. He then thanks Dallas and Chiedza. It lists CJ as the sole producer and one of the exec. producers. Then it goes on to say: Produced, Written, Arranged and Performed by VH, although there's an asterick indicating that 4 songs are excluded. "Pedro offers you his protection."

Now what the hell has Dionne been up to? I know Van got his start producting Dionne's "Hopeless" with Randy Jackson for the Love Jones soundtrack, but that was the last I heard of her.

i saw this article on him in an internet newsletter:
Music, Politics, and B-ish from the ATL LowDown's resident authority on audio and civic issues, Kinetic Van Hunt: A Little Home Grown For those of you in the know, burning some home grown is typically sketchy at best, and usually not worth it. While it is not clear if Van Hunt is from Atlanta, he has definitely spent some quality time here, having been a part of the EarthSeed/Groovement collective (big shout to Anasa! Do your thing, lady), responsible for the likes of India.Arie, Donnie, Seek and more. This has helped sprinkle a very comfortable and familiar soul vibe throughout his awesome debut Van Hunt on Capitol Records. More likely for Van Hunt, though, the experiences of watching his father and spending time with him as he grew up definitely had a different kind of home grown effect on Van Hunt. He watched how his father lived diametrically opposed extremes in his life, including faking insanity to catch a break from work. His music draws from all of that and provides the viewpoint that life sometimes pushes us toward our vices and that we try to make a beautiful reality out of life, despite that. What makes this album such artistic gumbo is witnessed in the track, “Seconds of Pleasure.” Van Hunt gives you a Bobby Blue Bland sound, mixed with lilting falsetto reminiscent of D’Angelo, Marvin Gaye and Eric Benet (1st Album). “Hold my Hand” sounds like a track you would hear on Res’ first album with retro ‘80’s double beat over soulsonic tracks, but it works very well. “Out of the Sky” is a great spring-time song that changes direction near the end, with some old Stevie Wonder, Original Musiquarium-style musings, with a little bit of Dionne Farris help to boot (Writer’s note: Dionne - music needs you now!). “What Can I Say” actually sounds Beatle-esque, like Paul McCartney came in to do a small reserved set - but it shows the range of Van Hunt’s talent and creativity. This album, co-executive produced by American Idol judge Randy Jackson (really?!) who also produced Nikka Costa (are you kidding me?!) is well worth any money you spend. If you missed Van Hunt perform at Smiths Olde Bar on March 13, 2004, then you need to be in the front of the stage when he performs at Music Midtown on the 99X stage (http://www.musicmidtown.com/bands/index.cfm) April 30-May 2. Van Hunt is some home grown well worth the effort. "Pedro offers you his protection."

I went to see them last year at On The Bricks and I almost got into a fight with this guy who came and stood in front of me and my daughter. The whole section I was sitting in backed me up on it too. It was so cool! You know how it is: you wait 5 hours in the blistering heat just to have a good seat and then some reveler comes along 5 minutes after Goerge Clinton gets on stage and stands in front of you!!! I was heated!!!! Our section decided that we would make a united front. "Pedro offers you his protection."

Exactly, but if you want to hear some funk (in the same vibe of Prince), R&B (like Sly), rock (in the line of The Beatles) and soul (in the form of Stevie), then this is the album for you!
