This song has one of the strongest verses I've ever heard in a pop song.There's an interesting story behind those lyrics...


"Well,your friends with their fancy persuasion
don't admit that it's part of a scheme

cause I ain't quite as dumb as I seem

but there ain't any use in pretendin'
it could happen to us anyday"

On the surface,it seems as if the singer is talking to a girlfriend who's considering leaving him.In reality,the song was written about a bandmember who was leaving (or contemplating leaving) to join a rival band.Ironically,the guy who wrote and sings lead on this song,Paul Carrack,has spent an entire career playing musical chairs... joining one band,then leaving,then joining another....lol...his best gig was his early-80s spot in the band Squeeze,where he sang lead on "Tempted" (his best vocal performance ever).

I know the song but it never occured to me who sang it! AND the lead singer was in Squeeze as well!? "Tempted" is the joint.
