R&B Classic of the Night: "Disco Lady" by JohnnieTaylor (1976)

What some considered an odd release for someone whose prior singles were "I Believe In You" and "Cheaper to Keep Her". Believe it or not, this tune was banned by some radio stations because of its supposed "suggestive" lyrics. We've certainly come a long way since then. If i'm not mistaken this was the first certified platinum single. (nice little guitar solo too.)

Shake it up, shake it down
Move it in, move it round, disco lady
Move it in, move it out, move it in round about, disco lady
Shake it up, shake it down
Move it in, move it around, disco lady

Well, hey sexy lady
Said I like the way you do your thang
Lord have mercy girl
You dance so fine and you're right on time
Girl you ought to be on T.V., on Soul Train
When you get the groove there ain't no stoppin'
Just can't help it, but I'm finger poppin'

Shake it up, shake it down, move it in, move it round, disco lady
Move it in, move it round, move it in, round about, disco lady
Shake it baby shake it, baby shake your thang
Shake it baby shake it, baby shake your thang

You've got me groovin'
I feel like movin'
You've got me movin'
Can't sit still I'm groovin' (I like that funky stuff)

Shake it up, shake it down, move it in, move it around, disco lady
Move it in, move it out
Shove it in round about, disco lady

Hey, sexy lady
Girl, you drive me crazy
You dance so fine and your right on time
Girl, you driving me out of my mind, ya
If it wasn't for the girl sittin' next to me
I'd jump right up and outta my seat you see
You got me hyp-no-tized, so mes-mor-ized
Girl, your movin' me
Girl your groovin' me

Shake it up, shake it down
Move it in, move it round, disco lady, ya
Move it in, move it out, shove it in round about, disco lady
Hey, you got me so set here in this discotheque
Girl, you're movin' me
Girl, you're groovin' me

Shake it baby shake it, baby shake your thang

Props to DavidEye for the thread concept and format. thumbs up!

After the short drum intro listen to the way the electric piano, bass, and guitar arrangement all melt into each other...at one point it becomes so subtle it's almost like the lead geetar phrase picks up where the electric piano melody leaves off, finishing the piano's melodic thought like the geetar knew what it was going to say...they roll into each other like butta, I tell ya...then the piano picks it right back up again...that intro is just damn sublime, I play it over and over, and over....it's Bootsy, Glen Goins, and Bernie Worrell. cloud9

funny,I was just watching one of my Soul Train videos from 1976,and it featured Johnnie Taylor on it.When he sang this song, the crowd went wild when he says "Girl, you oughta be on TV...on Soul Train ."He comes back to do two other songs, including "Somebody's Gettin' It".

But anyways....this song is da bomb!! I remember hearing it so much in spring/summer of 76.And yes,it was the first single to be certified platinum. It eventually sold over 2 million copies, which was unheard of back then.

I'm listening to "I Need a Freak" (radio@netscape) right now. Don't remember this song. It's kinda funky, it's got an 80s feel to it.

Oh to be 4 years old again! Those songs played an impressionable and important role in my love for music. Now as for this song, which songs great over 20 years later, it is really suggestive still. I always thought this would be a great work out song. It gives instructions on what to do. lol

Hey, I just found out, from a very reliable source, that Gary Shider (guitar) and Tiki Fulwood (drums) were on that track.
Thought you'd like to know.

True.

Please don't take this the wrong way.
But I spoke with one of the guys that played on the track.
He said the rhythm section was Bootsy, Gary Shider, Bernie Worrell and Tiki Fulwood.
Just thought i'd pass along some info directly from the source is all.

actually according to the liner notes for the remastered cd version, you guys are both right and wrong...

bernie, bootsy, glen goines... no mention of tiki or gary shider in the cd... jerry jones plays drums on the track and has played on a few cds with bootsy and george clinton, although i don't know if he was ever a member of p-funk...

anyhow, you should pick up the remastered version of "eargasm"... jamming sound and 2 bonus tracks... an extended version of "disco lady" and an instrumental version of "somebody's gettin' it"...
