George Michael QUITS ( GM "does a Prince" !!)

From BBC News online:

Pop star George Michael is abandoning the music business to release his songs online for free instead. The multi-millionaire singer said he will never make another album for sale in record shops because he does not need the cash and does not enjoy fame.
Fans will be given the option to make donations online in exchange for downloading the tracks, and the proceeds will be given to charity.
He is promoting his latest album, Patience, which he said is his last.
The 40-year-old star made his announcement during an interview with Jo Whiley on BBC Radio 1.

I'll hopefully be a happier man, giving my music and also doing something really positive with my music

Speaking about his decision, he said: "I'm sure it's unprecedented, it's definitely unprecedented for someone who still sells records.
"I've been very well remunerated for my talents over the years so I really don't need the public's money."
He added that he hoped people downloading his music would donate to his favourite charities.
'All the negativity'

Explaining his decision, the former Wham! frontman said: "It does two things - it takes the pressure off to have a collection of songs every so many years, which is what nearly killed me.
"I'm not pretending I won't be famous any more, but in the modern world if you take yourself out of the financial aspect of things, you're not making anybody any money, you're not losing anybody any money.

"Believe me, I'll be of very little interest to the press in a certain number of years.
"I'll hopefully be a happier man, giving my music and also doing something really positive with my music if people are generous enough to donate to the site. I'll remove myself from all that negativity."

At least someone has some sense. You don't need the packaging and publicity, just give me the music, I'll pay for the songs.

I agree. I love that Hellenic Man & good for him, I wish him much success. Happiness is the key and he seems to be following that path. It's about time he became more selfish in his life path and career.

typical drama queen.

hey george, newsflash...you already are of very little interest to the press. is he living in a dream world? i love his work, really i do. he is one of my favorite male singers and certainly one of my favorite singers of all time. but let's get real here...ol' georgey porgey hasn't been under immense pressure to produce anything in years. i love the bit about not pretending he won't always be famous...perhaps things are different in europe but over here in the states i don't think most peeps would bat an eye if he walked in the room. only the few who still buy his records...like me!

oh well. i guess this means he'll tour for this record and try to push his retirment thing...god, they really do all do this, don't they?

good luck, george. and i hope you get that rest you so desire.

Guess those good folk who signed him at Sony are feeling like idiots now. He pulled the same "I quit" shit on them in the early 1990s when he tried to break his contract with them, by threatening never to record another note.

Funnily enough, by pure coincidence, his new album is out on Monday.

While I enjoy his music, i cannot understand half of what he is trying 2 say. He hasn't released anything in YEARS. And does he seriously think that the press are really that interested in him NOW??smile Yeah, his decision certainly takes the "pressure" away. "Pressure" away 4rom making sure the songs are hits. I would have bought the album, but I am NOT downloading. I actually like goign into a record shop.

First of all,I am a huge fan of GM.However,I have to admit,I am really disappointed in George's latest move.I'm getting sick of longtime, forgotten artists complaining about the music biz and the "pressures" they go through.Yeah,we know it's a fucked-up business but can we please move on already? George really has no reason to complain.Unlike many other longtime artists (Donna Summer,Chaka Khan, etc) he was actually GIVEN a record deal, and the chance to make a comeback.I can name numerous other Old School artists who can't even get a new CD released these days. I'm sure they would love to have the Sony deal that George apparently rejected.George needs to stop being a whining drama queen.Either continue to release CDs or just retire. It's really that simple. But let's stop it with these whiny, dramatic gestures (Prince already took it to the extreme in the 90s).

I think he'll get bored of the lack of attention and put some proper albums out before 3 years are up.

rolleyes oh PLEASE. He has been taking his SWEET time to write and record. If I am informed, he hasn't had an album out since 19-fucking-99 (Songs From The Last Century) and it contained no original compositions from GM himself.

So, really, how uninspired as a writer is he to feel "nearly killed" by the pressure of following up his 1996 record?
19-muthafuckin-96! Just think of how your own life has changed since then. And in the world of pop music, that was LIGHT YEARS ago.

Surprisingly, it's WWW.GEORGEMICHAEL.COM. It's been around for awhile. he's put out a few songs - singles - FREEEK was off the hook badass. The new song sounds great.

He could take 4 years to put out a record, or he could put out crap. he's a whiner sure enough, but the man can sing and his songs are good. If you have to wait this long for a decent record, then shit, go on with it. And if he's telling you it's going to be free and you wanna bitch about it? Freaks all of ya. Freaks.
