Paul Nice vs. Jay-Z You thought the Danger Mouse remixes were "nice"? You must have missed Paul Nice's use of the Jay-Z acapellas. The samples on Paul Nice are much more inviting, and it sounds like real hip hop.
My personal fave? The bedtrack to "Change Clothes" is now constructed from "Mama Used To Say" by Junior, and it fits like a fucking glove. Here is a review from O-Dub at turntablelab.com, including the real audio samples! turntablelab says: Paul Nice is a little late in getting his version of The Black Album to market compared to the now zillion other versions that have popped up, but he makes it worth the wait. Rather than convert an old beat tape into "new" tracks, Paul custom produced this whole thing to order. For example, check out the way he scratches in KRS-One’s pronouncements for the jump off to "Public Service Announcement". His best cuts wholly re-envision the original, such as on "Moment of Clarity", where he brushes off Eminem’s minor key mediocrity with a slick, ‘70s soul feel that switches up into a rough-hewn, minimalist track. "Change Clothes" retains the playfulness of the OG but jets ahead of the Neptunes with a twisty, roller skate jam that’ll make you forget what the original sounded like. Paul does hit a couple of rough spots: his version of "Encore" begins with promise, then ultimately feels about as flat and repetitive as Kanye’s original- but he mostly keeps par everywhere else. His smoky, loungy mix for "Dirt Off Your Shoulders" is a welcome change, and he’s sure to get heads bouncing off his "99 Problems" remix that brings back some classic Kool G Rap flavor. "Lucifer" is another standout, dropping that sound bwoy vibe on the remix. Think you can’t take any more of these Black Album remixes? Sorry, but you got to make room for one more. O-Dub | |
