Who are your favorite Underrated Artists?

The discussion about the Joss Stone hype got me thinking about underrated artists over time. Who are your faves? My underrated diva list includes:
Phyllis Hyman-my fave
Joyce Sims
Gwen Guthrie
Sharon Reed
Evelyn Champagne King
Melba Moore
Jean Carn
Patti Austin
Shirley Jones
Shirley Murdock
Angela Bofill
Angela Winbush
Oleta Adams
Randy Crawford
Marlena Shaw
Brenda Russell
Some of the greatest voices of soul that people ignore...my 2cents.

Anxiety

Neneh Cherry should have gotten a lot bigger than she did, and Homebrew should have been a great big fat hit record.

I thought nobody was gonna talk about this cat!

Stoned Pt. 2 has just been released in th UK, but I'm in tour in France so I won't hear it for at least another 2 weeks! Grrrrr!

A slept-on Multi-instrumentalist with some amazing ideas and concepts... heavily compared to Marvin Gaye.

Wilco (they're genius)
Soul Asylum (Dave Pirner's lyrics break my heart)
Neneh Cherry (totally agree that Homebrew should have been platinum)
Kevin Max (oh my gosh, he has a voice like Freddy Mercury - why don't people care!?)
Radiohead (I know they're popular, but imho, better than Coldplay and deserving of more. I guess Thom Yorke should've hooked up with Gwenyth).

The Compromise Theory:
Based on my analysis, I believe the government faked the plane crash and demolished the WTC North Tower with explosives.
The South Tower, in a simultaneous but unrelated plot was brought down by actual terrorists.
Is it a deal?

Omar!

This man is the reason there is a D'Angelo or a Maxwell. Very underrated and very misunderstood. From his 1990 debut "There's Nothing Like This" to his more recent CD "Best By Far," Omar is a musical force to be reckoned with. Hopefully with his upcoming CD, this British soul singer who is influenced by Stevie Wonder, Syreeta Wright, and Bill Withers, can finally get the respect he deserves.

Check out [/url]omarmusic.net for more info on this talented artist.

They sell only a fraction of what Coldplay sell. But then they don't cater to the masses. A shame, tho'... I like Coldplay but for me Radiohead's music is a ton better.

I was glad to see Adriana Evans in the ranks here and N'Dea Davenport is severly underrated and underappreciated. I would add:

Brigette McWilliams
Laurnea (haven't heard her 2nd album but "Betta Listen" was the bomb)
Joan Osborne
Cece Peniston
