Latin Boy Band Menudo to Hold Auditions NEW YORK (Reuters)
- The all-boy pop group Menudo, which launched Ricky Martin's career and sold millions of albums in Latin America and the United States, will conduct an international star search to resurrect the band, the group holding the rights to the band's name said on Tuesday. An open audition in New York this summer for boys ages 10 to 14 will kick off the search for the next members of the singing and dancing group that was a precursor to acts like Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC. By the end of its run in the 1970s and 1980s, 30 boys had performed with Menudo, selling 20 million records. The new Menudo will have "a contemporary hip urban/Latin crossover sound in both English and Spanish," Menudo Entertainment LLC said in a news release. Spokeswoman Cathy Callegari said there was a tremendous market for wholesome music aimed at the prepubescent fan, as others in the market tackle more adult themes. © Reuters 2004.
