I started listening to The Beatles when I was six years old and since that time music has been my favourite hobby. I doubt anything will ever surpass it.

music "And it's me you need to show... how deep is your love?" music

Music is better than sex lol

well,I don't know if I'd go that far...lol....but my love of music is incredibly deep.I can't think of any time in my life when music wasn't around, making a huge impact on me.Growing up in the 70s and being exposed to all that great music....man,I feel blessed to have been a part of that.

Finess, think back to the 70s when all of these songs came out and you were enjoying them.Did you ever think that, years later, you'd be on a computer chatting with other people who are just as obsessed as you? LOL..I trip on that all the time.

I love music but I don't take it a seriously as many other people I know. I have no talent for producing music myself (tone deaf) but I cannot imagine my life without it.

My grandfather lost his hearing some years ago and he has always said that the thing that he misses the most is being able to hear his records... I really feel for him.

As for it being better than sex - well it depends on the music and it depends on the person doesn't it.

In reading this thread I'm reminded of the line from the movie almost famous when the "band-aids" say

"If you ever find yourself alone just go to the record store and hang out with all of your friends (the records)"

People who know me (that aren't musicians) called me obsessed about music. I've gotten to the point where just listening and playing it aren't enough. Discovering new artists is like finding a new restraunt in your neighborhood, but it's deeper than that, it just fullfills my soul.

Thanks to Davideye, Namepeace and everyone else I've forgot to mention HERE at the ORG for really helping to fullfill my soul with new music. grouphug

The first record I can remember dancing to was "Do Ya Wanna Get Funky With Me?" by Peter Brown in the early seventies. I remember how that song made me feel and how music in general has made me feel. It has saved my life on many occassions. It was my escape when I needed one. It's the queen of my soul. I also want to show my love and appreciation for Finess and David as well as Harle, UptownDeb, Handclaps and Manki, folks that share their knowledge with me and were kind to me right off the bat. Many props to JanFan4L, pimpin and Slave. I am in awe of you guys. I thought I knew alot but it seems I know nothing. I also want to thank everyone that visits this forum for making it my favorite place to visit on this site.

Music is a huge part of my life. There is almost always a cd on in my home. I love many different genres. I love anyone with a truly great voice and musicians that write and play. Lately we've been listening to the Buena Vista Social Club. Wow, what great music these old timers made. I love old Chet Baker, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday etc....I also enjoy good old rock&roll such as the Stones, Beatles, Van Halen and I also love r & b and of course the funk!

GREAT THREAD Finess.

Man, as you know, I truly dig music.....I think music mean more to some people than it do to other people. Let me tell you my story bruh.....

My roots are in R&B and soul from the 70's. I grew up in a house with a family that loved music. My mom and father bought records alot back in those days. My father had an 8-track player and all that. My mom loved stuff like Harold Melvin And The Blue Notes(my mom was a Teddy woman), Natalie Cole, The Brothers JohnsonThe Ebonys, The Jackson 5(espcially on songs when Jermaine sung lead)....that's why she loved "I Found That Girl". She also loved gospel, she had albums by James Clevland and Shirley Caesar in her collection. My father LOVED music. He had very eclectic taste....I mean pops had a wide range of music in his collection....it was through him that my love of jazz began. My father had stuff like..The Blackbyrds, Donald Byrd, Grover Washington Jr(my father bought all of his 70's albums) plus Lou Rawls, Patti Labelle(my father is a Patti woman, he's LOVES himself some Patti). He also had Ohio Players, Isley Brothers, Walter Jackson BB King, Wes Montgomery and Lionel Hampton. And I've barely scratched the surface on what's in his collection. As I've stated before radio in the 70's was something to behold. Radio was so good back then. In addition to hearing all of this great music in our living room.... I got my first radio in December of 1975 and my love for music deepened even more throughout the rest of the 70's and beyond. I would listen to rock/pop/top 40 AM stations...in addtion to listening to AM radio soul/r&b stations. On those stations I would hear stuff like....

Boston-More Than A Feeling
Captain And Tennile-Love Will Keep Us Together
Neil Sedaka- Laughter In The Rain
Gary Wright-Dream Weaver
Ted Nugent-Cat Scratch Fever
Bee Gees-You Should Be Dancing
Leo Sayer-You Make Me Feel Like Dancing
Vicki Sue Robinson-Turn The Beat Around
Eagles-Hotel California

My musiscal horizon broadened even more at the end of the 70's and into the 80's. When it came to music I always gave it a chance. I grew up during a time where soul/R&B music was called "Black music" and it was sometimes called "nigger music" by some white people....and pop/rock music was called "white folks music". When I was in elementary school during the holidays, our teacher would allow us to bring music for our annual Christmas parties. Every year, there would be the huge argument as to what kind of music we would listen and dance to. For example, in 1979.....the white kids wanted to hear The Clash, The Eagles,The Knack and Rod Stewart.....and the blacks wanted to hear Michael Jackson, Mass Production("Firecracker" was STILL the big hit in 1979 during that time}, The Barkays, Cameo and the first rap song to cross over "Rappers Delight" by The Sugar Hill Gang. Our people would called The Eagles, The Clash and stuff like that "white folks music and even DEVIL music"}And white people would call R&B/soul music "black folks music" and I even overheard a couple of white kids calling it "nigger/queer"music. Yeah it was rough in the 70's.

But I never understood all of the resentment/denial of certain forms of music. To me, music is music and I enjoy all of it...To me, music is it's own reward and the BEST MUSIC{regardless of genre)surely reward if you give it a chance Another thing I want to say is that music is an open sky with endless amounts of possibilities.....my knowledge and love of music includes R&B/Soul, Pop/New Wave, Gospel, Rock, Hip-Hop/Rap, Jazz, shoot I can even get into a little Country and Western. I like Classical..but I admit I have lots to learn and listen to as it relates to this genre of music.

It's all good to me...from Madonna to Mamas And The Papas.....From Prince to Percy Sledge.....From the Jacksons to Jackson Browne.....from Freddie Mercury to Freddie Hubbard
From Janet Jackson to James Brown....From Art Of Noise to Art Blakey And The Jazz Messengers. From David Bowie to David Ruffin. If the music is good I'm down!!!!!

See to some people...music is like audio wallpaper...it's just something to have in the background while you got people at your crib.....But to those who "get inside the music" those are the individuals are the ones that will be enriched because they want to get all that music has to offer and they don't mind embarking on the journey.....It's really a give and receive principle. If you give your time, care and attention to music....the music will give you pleasure, joy, fulfillment... etc.....

In closing....people often ask what can music TRULY do for you?.....my response is what do you want it to do?

Peace,
Brother 9/15

man, im sittin here with tears in my eyes why?... because i can truly understand and feel what u were sayin, because i went through the same thing, and grew up in the same time ya know??.tuly amazing how so many different people from different places share the common bond and life stories that Music has done for them, through good and bad, Music is the only that can take you someplace when you dont wanna be where you are at the time.

what Music has done for me, i can never repay it back u know, my only way of showing somekind of paying it forward is sharing it with others and schooling them on it and sharing the love of music with my child.oh yeah he loooooves music, Bro915 thank u so much for that reply, and all of u who have replied to it.

its truly a wonderful thing when people get together and discuss the one thing we truly love and thats Music and the people who have shared thier gifts with us as children to adults.
