Alicia Keyes for Lena Horne Movie?

I've been reading posts in newsgroups from people who say Janet Jackson was all wrong to play the part of Lena Horne, so it's good that she's out of the project.

The new person that I've seen being backed for the movie is Alicia Keyes. If new producers get on board, and Miss Keyes was willing to take acting and diction lessons, she would make a better Lena than Janet.

[b] I think Alicia would make a great Lena Horne. She has enough spunk yet she can be very sophisticated and classy...I think she should be considered. Of course there's always Halle Berry! wink

I think, if anything, all this speculation shows how there just aren't enough roles for black actresses. Anytime folks start grasping for Alicia Keyes to portray Lena Horne, there's a problem with the casting agents in Hollywood.

Even if there's a relative unknown, there has to be someone qualified to play Horne. Shucks, it should go beyond complexion, too. But, complexion should be a factor, I think. (I'm scarred from seeing Cicely Tyson play Coretta Scott King -- y'all have to excuse me.)

Even some established actresses might be cool for the job. Essence Atkins? Nicole Ari Parker? Cynda Williams? Anne Deavere-Smith? I'm just throwing out names of various actresses, because I'm not sure about the age range. Smith is a WONDERFUL character actor and has some visibility from her recurring "West Wing" role. Lynn Whitfield?

Please, anyone but Keyes. Yech.

I like Thandie. But, I don't think she'd do a good Lena Horne, for some reason. I just don't.

Me neither. Halle Barry would be no better for this role than Janet or Thandie. You've got to look at body type (build) as much as complexion. Mannerisms can be taught but the way a woman is physically built and carries herself is altogether different. I could see Alicia playing the role but from what I've seen of them Alicia is a sweetheart and Lena was far from it so I don't know about that. However, Alicia looks the part than Janet does (who is also a sweetheart from what I can tell) smile . Halle could pull off the acting role but wouldn't look right. Besides, she was already cast perfectly in the Dorothy Dandridge story and there's no need to do another movie like that.

They should go with either an unkown or maybe Jazmine Guy. If they don't cast it right you end up with What's Love Got To Do With It. We all know that Angela Bassett did a hell of a job but I suspect Tina wasn't quite as strong as she was and the mannerisms were all wrong.

Unfortunately, I think Halle's too busy suiting up in her piss-fetish-porn costume for the upcoming "Catwoman".

Alicia Keyes? Lena Horne ain't gangsta! eek

I thought about Tamia, but I don't know if she can act. And forget Halle Berry. Must she play every black movie goddess there ever was?

How about they just scrap the production all together. I know I'm not gonna watch it. Give Missus Lena a novel or something.

Once again, they went with who's popular and not who's best for the job. Someone like Gladys Knight would have ripped the roof off that mutha.

The solution would be to hold auditions in New York and Los Angeles. They could have a casting call for a light complexioned, black actress. She wouldn't have to be able to sing. She could lip sync over Lena's vocals.

Poor Janet. In the past, she wanted to play Dorothy Dandridge in a film, but that role went to Halle Berry. And now she has lost the Lena Horne role.

lol her options are dwindling.Perhaps she should just do an ORIGINAL film, instead of always trying to do someone's life story?
