Super 70's Pop Song Of The Day(2/23/04): The Carpenters- We've Only Just Begun(1970)

"Sharin' horizons that are new to us

Watchin' the signs along the way

Talkin' it over just the two of us

Workin' together day to day, together"

This song is so so nice!!!....Especially beautiful is the chorus with those multiple layers of background vocals along with the arrangement by Richard Carpenter as Karen Carpenter is singing. This is surely one of my favorite pop songs of the 70's

Enjoy,
Brother 9/15

awwhhhh sweet memories! nod

Carpenters "Greatest Hits" was amongst the first let's say 20 albums I bought, so u can imagine I was really really really really really really really really really young then lol
I still like their output, Karen had such a warm & friendly voice, and from their catchy melodies there's no escaping anyway.

still owning most of their stuff on vinyl though, have to look for some good compilation or box set, any recommendations?
Vanglorious... this is protected by the red, the black, and the green. With a key... sissy!

what ever happened 2 Paul williams who wrote that?... story goes, they heard the song as a promotion for a car.and Richard Carpenter went to A & M and inquired about the song,, and they recorded it,i distinctly remember Herb Alpert saying Karens voice was amazing during that session and done in 2 takes

I love the Carpenters. Richard Carpenter is a genius and Karen was a brilliant percussionist - as well as that voice.

They practically invented the Rock Ballad when they released "Goodbye To Love". Nobody had ever placed a heavy-metal guitar into a ballad, before that track.

I am a huge Carpenters fan!!!

I have a documentary where the songwriters for 'We've Only Just Begun' was origianlly a commerical jingle. I think it was for life insurance.

Herp Alpert had them write verses to the chorus and BING BANG BOOM...one of the most beautiful love songs I've ever heard!

It is such a tender beautiful ballad and I totally get misty when I hear this and many other Carpenters songs.

How many of you throw this in your car stereo and sing your heart out!

Other classic tracks: "Solitare", "Hurting Each Other", "Goodbye To Love", "Ticket To Ride" and "Yesterday Once More"

I played my dad an instrumental version of "We've Only Just Begun" by O'Donel Levy and he was singing the Carpenters lyrics along with the guitar lol

Ever since this thread was started,I've been listening to the Carpenters non-stop.My lord,"We've Only Just Begun" is just gorgeous, isn't it? Too beautiful for words! THIS is why I love 70s music so much...there's actually a MELODY to these songs! Not to mention the lush instrumentation, the amazing vocal arangements, and the angelic vocals by Karen.

Today's music just can't compare.

Don't mean to be an asshole, but I;ve never understood why people like the carpetners. Sure karen had a good voice, but that music was so sickly sweet. It was the nutrasweet of music.

I'm not too wild about the Carpenters, but Curtis Mayfield's version of this is pretty damn beautiful!

I tend to agree with Ash & Hectim. The Carpenters were just a little too sachrinne (sp?) for my tastes. Generally, I don't mind hearing songs they did covered by other artists. Paul Williams wrote a whole bunch of the songs they did, and his stuff is usually great (I highly reccommend his soundtrack to Brian De Palma's "Phantom Of The Paradise"). Curtis Mayfield's version of this track was far superior as well.

Most recently, Paul Williams had a cameo in "The Rules Of Attraction"
