speaking of Funkadelic,I just recently discovered their 1976 album 'Hardcore Jollies' and I honestly don't know what to think of it! The music is.....messy? I don't know how to describe it.I know there are alot of P-Funk fans here,so I'd like to know how you feel about this album. Is it considered one of their best works? Perhaps it's really a masterpiece that I just don't "get"? Help me out guys. It's one of those albums that I WANT to like. [This message was edited Tue Feb 24 6:13:00 2004 by DavidEye]

[This message was edited Tue Feb 24 6:13:00 2004 by DavidEye] in all Honesty, Hardcore Jollies u have to listen 2 stoned out your fuckin head, the onlycut salvagable is that Live mix of Cosmic slop, its a bit a bit messy and all over the place an inconsistent vibe..which was never Funkadelic's bag at all every album had one vibe and it was consistent. Jollies..is a mess compared 2 past albums.

I've often said the same thing about the org! but it has more than a little bitch in it.
on the subject of hardcore jollies, "Smokey" , "you scared the lovin outta me" and "adolescent funk" are my jams!! Yeah, the album seems to be a bit scatterbrained, but you have to take the time of it's release into consideration, maybe they thought it was cutting edge to mix it up like that.

On the subject of Hardcore Jollies, weren't most Funkadelic albums like that anyway? Particularly, the album that came before it (Tales of Kidd Funkadelic) and even the one after (One Nation...) were all pretty messy and scatterbrained. That's just how Funkadelic albums are to my ears. They're not bad, but they're not great. There are moments of brilliance on each Funkadelic album and also moments of inane filler. Parliament albums were generally cleaner and some might say better, but Funkadelic was more raw and experimental. Funkadelic as a band were just as essential though.

Personally I like Hardcore Jollies. Funkadelic's concept was to be freaky , loose and little more bizarre than Parliament. Where Parliament was the conceptual more radio friendly side of the funk with alot of vocals and horns.
David Eye check out "Let's Take It To the Stage" that's one of my personal faves next to "America Eats It's Young"

After Eddie Hazel's departure from Funkadelic, the music became so-so and predictable. Eddie with his broad taste in music kept Funkadelic's music diverse and interesting. Most of the younger guitarist that followed Eddie were either trying to mimic him or their style of playing was much too classic rockish with no blues or soul. Listen to the guitar work in "No Compute" off of the "Cosmic Slop" lp, now listen to any cut from the later albums. Yes, there were two completely different Funkadelics, the band with Eddie and the other band without Eddie. Eddie Hazel made Funkadelic!

Now "Games, Dames and Guitar Thangs", that da sh*t! Listen to the closing of "So Goes The Story", that's classic Eddie, he always made a point of teasing you by taking you somewhere else at the very end of a song and leave you begging for more, like on "Red Hot Mama". I especially love his contribution to the cut titled "I'm holding you responsible" off of "The Brides,,," second album titled "Never buy Texas from a Cowboy". YES, Eddie IS Funkadelic. So all you new comers getting into Funkadelic, buy everything with Eddie on it, and forget the rest. Sorry Pfunkjazz, I had to set the record straight.

Seeing this thread again, made me think about an interview I read with Meshell n'degeochello.
I remeber her saying something about how this song inspired her to write Leviticus: Faggot

"Why frown? Even the sun go down!"
It's one of those Funkadelic tracks (like No head no backstage pass) that seem to have a little zappa vibe in there. Cool! @ Hardcore Jollies: ppl, you must be kidding. "Dedicated to the guitar players of the world", damn right! Comin'Down The Mountain, The title track, Cosmic Slop with the "space people intro"... that's classic P-Funk! I prefer Let's take it To The Stage, but Hardcore Jollies is a much stronger album than Uncle Jamm and others. As for Hazel "being" Funkadelic... There's too many great Funkadelic tracks without him to say that. "Loose Booty", "Let's take it To The Stage", "Philmore", "Pussycat", "Electric Spanking", Knee Deep, One Nation...

Let me correct my statement. Yes there are many great early Funkadelic songs that do not actually feature Eddie, but I'm sure that it was Eddie who broadened the horizon of all the band members at that time. We all know that it was because of Eddie's social issues and vices that kept him from being in the studio with the rest of the band on many occasions. After Eddie there was a ton of guitar oriented songs by Funkadelic, but none with the fire and soul as there was when Eddie was around. Don't get me wrong, I too brought every album by Funkadelic, yearning to feel the funk just once again. So I now found much delight in Bootsy, and what he brought to Funkadelic (even though Bootsy was around during the early days). But come on, "Electric Spanking", Knee Deep, One Nation, you got to be kidding? Those songs compared to "Good thoughts, bad thoughts", "March to the Witches' Castle", "Red Hot Mama", "Let's make it last", LISTEN,LISTEN,LISTEN!!!

Hardcore Jollies was a transitional album as Funkadelic had just signed with Warner Brothers following several years with Westbound. As a result, two Funkadelic albums were released that year, Hardcore Jollies on WB and Tales of Kidd Funkadelic on Westbound. Both albums are uneven as a result, but both also contain classic Funkadelic. I prefer Hardcore Jollies because it has some of the hardest guitar jams the band ever devoted to wax. However, when I first bought it in the late 1970s, it was too demented and sinister sounding for me to get into. However, through the years I have gotten past that and now really appreciate the entire album. Comin' Round the Mountain, Smokey, Hardcore Jollies and Cosmic Slop (live) are outstanding. The rest ranges from good to fair, but, much like Prince, even on an off day P-Funk is way better than 90 percent of the rest! Incidentally, Tales of Kidd Funkadelic includes the classics Take Your Dead Ass Home and the Undisco Kid. Overall, that album has much less guitar and is more like a freakier version of Parliament whereas Hardcore delivered the shredding guitar that was supposed to be a hallmark of Funkadelic. I remember when I was in high school and used to bring a boombox to school every day. None of the white kids (Santa Monica, CA high school) except me were into funk and they all thought only white guys could truly jam on guitar. I would play them some of Hardcore Jollies and they would be blown away and guess it was all these white rock bands they were famliar with. Of course, when they found out it was Funkadelic, they quickly began dismissing its validity and backing off how impressed they were with it. To this day, that kind of racism in the music world pisses me off. Funkadelic should be a staple among album-oriented rock station programming nationwide. Musical segregation sucks! But I digress. Give Hardcore Jollies plenty of listens and it will be a rewarding experience.
Peace, Scott If you've got funk, you've got style.
