the stranglers........

any1 got any stories 2 tell.....

i cant actually remember who my 1st gig was but i think it mighta been the stranglers glasgow apollo 1978 ??? not sure it was certainly a punk era band like the jam the undertones the buzzcocks siouxsie the cure etc etc i saw em all, cant remember who was 1st !!!

anyway i bought the stranglers new cd 2day norfolk coast ,the guy at the counter said "that cd is selling really well" interesting as they r nowhere near as popular as they used 2 b.

ive only flicked through the cd and it does sound really great ! they've had a new singer "paul roberts" 4 about 10 years now, he's really good/ not as good as hugh cornwell but still not fair 2 compare i suppose.

so any1 got the new album ?
if so wot u think of it ?
any goin 2 c em live soon ? (they play glasgow on mar 9 i'll b there)
any1 got any tales 2 tell ?

i 4got 2 say i saw em live last year they were sen-sational !!!

The first song I heard by them was their cover of Bacharach's classic, "Walk On By". I just thought it was soooo cool! And they were probably the first punk band to use keyborads, if I'm not mistaken. I also like that "Golden Brown" tune. Pretty catchy. Very good band.

Don't have the new album, DB, but I did love them when they were fronted by the mighty Hugh. I didn't bother following them after he left, but I have to say I'm curious about the new album. Which of their past releases does it compare with?

I think that they should have stopped after their 84 (aural sculpture?) or 86 album ( the one with always the sun) - la folie and feline are 2 great unique records - I love esp the song european female + strange little girl( covered by tori amos)

i didnt bother following em after hugh left either , the only band i can think of who replaced the main man and survived well!!! , were ac/dc .i bought the stranglers laidblack album 2/3 years ago, (hits re-recorded acoustic with new singer) and 16 out o 18 tracks were awsome !!! i was only kinda flirtin about the new stranglers scene up until that album and tour !.

the latest album sounds a bit like there early stuff a more "polished" black and white not as "rough and ready" ! its not like there mainly 90's electro material its kinda back 2 the guitars and bass with just a hint o keyboards !!! its not as good as b and w but its a real grower ive played it a few times now and i'm startin 2 love it , 4get sometimes how could a bass man jj really is !!!

honestly , norfolk coast and laidblack r great stranglers II albums !!! give em a try u wont b dissapointed.

they r really different now, nothing like the era u mention, i used 2 think like u 2, until the last 3 years or so, the stranglers r back with not so much a bang , but they r back with theyre more original punky sound , less keyboard and synth's !!!

I'll try 'em both. Thanks for the tip. Completely agree with you about JJ being one of the best bass players out there. That live version of "Midnight Summer Dream/European Female" from 1986 should be compulsory listening for all aspring bassists.
