The Can DVD & their albums...

I got given the "Can DVD" today.

There's 2 DVDs of live concerts, interviews, documentaries and bonus stuff

Disc 3 is a CD featuring 13 tracks from the main core of the bands solo projects.

Now, I'm going to be honest. I have always heard a lot of good things about Can but this is the first time I've really been exposed to them and my first Can aquisition.

I've not watched the DVDs yet but I'm nearly at the end of the CD of solo projects and I've been knocked out so far and I can't wait to delve into the DVDs.

I'm a bit skint at the mo', so I can't afford to spend too much on music. If I buy myself a Can album out of next month's paycheque, which one should it be?

Any Can experts out there care to advise me?

Anxiety

I'm sooooo tempted to get this. I just don't know if I'm enough of a Can fan to appreciate all the stuff on the DVD box set....but that never stopped me before!

As for Can albums, I would recommend anthologies first - CANnibalism 1 and/or 2...there's also a nice two-disc anthology you can find, and from there you can figure out which tracks you like and then get the albums they appear on. That's how I go about it, anyway.

Thanks Anx!

I just watched the discography feature and it plays you a couple of minutes from a track off every album. 13 studio albums? I think you're right, the anthologies might be the right way. Anyway, I'm gonna go put my feet up and watch the concert. I'll update you when I've waded through the DVD properly. After all, I'm a Can virgin so if I dig it, it's probably worth getting.

Well, I watched the concert and then listened to the 4 tracks they've remixed into 5.1 and was so blown away, when the doorbell rang and a couple of mates popped in, I played it all again for their benefit. They'd never even heard of Can and now they're converted.

Only problem with the concert is there's no tracklist for it. Also, the director asked them to run it as 1 track on the DVD so it couldn't be skipped & they agreed.

Very impressed, you liking Can.

Anyway, my suggestions are to start off with the Can compilation - CAN ANTHOLOGY, which covers the band's key highlights, then I'd recommend FUTURE DAYS, MONSTER MOVIE, EGE BAMAYASI and TAGO MAGO in that order. After that get everything else - it's not all good, but even when it's self-indulgent noodling, it's UNIQUE self-indulgent noodling.

i tell ya---you are truly living the rough life. wink

when you get done with scraping the surface of Can, you then got the remix album (carl craig-y'all) and the solo projects.

i will hook ya up with

Holger Czukay's "Movies"

...a brilliant taste of cut-n-paste!

I can recommend Flow Motion -v good album, which spawned their only UK hit 'I Want More'.

and I second 'Movies' by Holgar Czukay which is one of my all time favourite albums. He also went on to collaborate with David Sylvian who also happens to be a favourite of mine.

The second documentary on the DVD has a lot of their TV appearences. It makes me cringe when it shows them performing "I Want More" on Top Of The Pops because it's introduced by one of light entertainments biggest twats ever Noel Edmunds and he makes some appaling pun about their name which I can't even bring myself to quote because it's so fucking bad.

I just take comfort in comedian Chris Morris stitching him up into campaigning against a drug that doesn't exits. When Edmunds found out he'd been had he tried to get Chris Morris' program "Brasseye" banned!

Anyway, I've been through everything on the DVD (except the DVD-Rom feautres, I'll have to check them at work) and it really is brilliant. I'm now a wealth of Can knowledge thanks to the DVD's many documentaries, interviews, the discography, biographies, etc.

What a band!
