Bonus Jazz Album Of The Day(2/20/04).....Jaco Pastorious-Jaco Pastorious(Self Titled Album...1976)

Every now and then a musican will come along with a style and technique and passion tha will make every musican that play that particular instrument go back to school and relearn and everything they THOUGHT they knew about their instrument.....

Here was one of those musicans

Everything you love about the man is here. Even though he did superior work with the super fusion group Weather Report, you'll have a hard time coming up with an album that is a greater testament of his gifts and talents than this classic record. It's all here..... stunning compositions like "Continum". Please check the beautiful string session on the track "Kuru/Speak Like A Child"arranged by him BTW. This is a stellar piece. And the strings and violins in the song conveys drama, anxiety and beauty all in one sweeping motion. This has to be HEARD to be believed. Herbie Hancock plays beautifully on this number. Another stunning performance is "Potrait Of Tracy" in which it's just the man and his bass nothing more and nothing less. The incredible bass riff of this song was used vocally by the R&B female group SWV(Sisters With Voice) for their 1997 R&B hit "Rain" which proves that Jaco's influence extended outside of jazz into the R&B and hip-hop world. "(Used To Be A) Cha-Cha" is just awesome. Check the way Pastorious and Hancock interlock at the climax of the song. You can hear Herbie banging on the piano like a madman of sorts and Jaco is just grooving along in a frenzy(the remastered version includes an alternate take of this track and Herbie's solo on that one is nothing short of a miracle). This is great stuff.....INDEED!!!!! Try to get this album on vinyl. there are sounds on the vinyl that are not on the CD and the strings/violins on Kuru/Speak Like A Child for example sound fuller on vinyl than it does on CD(but the remastered CD is great though in sound). This is a classc record!!!!!It's one for the ages as it shows Jaco's mastery of sounds, compositions, arrangements and that BASS!!!!!

Davideye....I really recommend this one to you..if you don't have it and since you love 70's music. It's beautiful challenging and accessible at the same time. You can definitely use this recording to make your case that 70's music was absolutely superb. biggrin

This should NOT be called a 'bonus' album!

Obviously, Stanley Clarks 'Shool Days' is up there with it as a bass-headz must have, or jazzists must get (although it's more funk).
jerkoff.....drool BULLSEYE! cool
