Jazz Album Of The Day(2/19/04):Art Blakey And The Jazz Messengers-Free For All(1964)

One of the greatest jazz records EVER made IMO..lead by one of the most amazing/exciting drummers of the jazz era.....Mr. Art Blakey.....Blakey ranks with Miles when it comes to jumpstarting and discovering new talent. But on these sessions, he teams up with players that are already proven in their own right.....Cedar Walton on piano.....The great saxophonist Wayne Shorter and one of the greatest trumpet players and my pesonal favorite player on the trumpet of all time..... Mr. Freddie Hubbard.

The recording starts out with one of the most amazing pieces of music ever written and recorded.... the title track "Free For All". A jazz standard hands down and written by Shorter (known for his ability to compose striking, daring yet accessible music), this music just swings and swings and swings. Everyone on this classic track take breathtaking solos.....and then to close it out you have Art Blakey displaying his fierce rhythmic chops in thundering fashion....IT'S A DRUM SOLO FOR THE AGES.....TO BE EXACT. Don't be surprise if you find yourself hitting the repeat button after this landmark track is over.

Another great tune is another great Shorter composition "Hammer Head". Truth be told, this track swings just as hard as the classic title track. GREAT STUFF. Freddie Hubbard also contributes a winning swingng number titled "C.O.R.E.".

In closing, there are times where if a listener really get inside the music...the experience will be one to measure the rest of their life against. This classic album has JUST that kind of music. A masterpiece for the ages....40 years later...It is still TIGHT!!!!!

Track this one down....it may be out of print...go to amazon.com and see if you can cop a used copy...You won't be disappointed TRUST ME!!!!!
