Old School R&B Track Of The Day(2/19/04): Karyn White Featuring BabyFace-Love Saw It

Rewind back to 1988/1989. You know this was the timeframe that Al B. Sure, Keith Sweat, Guy, Today, Johnny Kemp and even Bobby Brown himself was running thangs.

But this lady had a nice debut album out during this time. This was the third single taken from that album simply titled Karyn White. It's one of the few songs in terms of production that I like by Babyface....La Reid/Babyface and Jimmy Jam And Terry Lewis were the hottest two producing team at that time....but I always prefered Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis style which was more groove/funk oriented. Babyface stuff was too lush and soft. But I respect his run/streak as a "hit" producer.

This song is great. Nice arrangement.beautiful chord changes and superb vocals turns from Babyface and Karyn White. This used to be my jam in early 1989.

Kind of ironic that Karyn White who Babyface/La Reid produced on her first album.....ended up marrying Terry Lewis( one half of the producing duo who was Reid's And Babyface's competition in terms of producing in the late 80's).

Enjoy,
Brother 9/15

I liked Karyn White a lot. Too bad she kind of disappeared and went back to being Terry Lewis' hausfrau instead of a pop singer.

disbelief Babyface was too "lush and soft"? What about these jams...

"Rock Steady" by The Whispers (1987)
"Dial My Heart" by the Boys (1988)
"Body Talk" by The Deele (1984)
"Heat Of The Moment" by After 7 (1990)
"Secret Rendezvous" by Karyn White (1988)
"The Lover In Me" by Sheena Easton (1988)
"Girlfriend" by Pebbles (1987)
"It's No Crime" by Babyface (1989)
"Rock Bottom" by Babyface (1993)

lol although he is known primarily for his ballads,Babyface can groove to.

Was Karyn White the "I'm Not Your Superwoman" lady? I think I liked her back in tha day.

Speaking of old school r & b and Bobby Brown, remember that crap tune "Tenderoni"? What is that anyway? Does it come in cheese and tomato varieties? Maybe he should make a "Low Carb Tenderoni" for these Atkins Frinendly Days. Just a thought.

He's ok.....but I'm sorry I just can't get with his style.....he can groove a little but it's not as grittier as Jam/Lewis.....Now he has a slow jam that he produced for a group that was off da chains...that one might be our R&B track of the day tomorrow...who knows..... biggrin

Rhonda Clark-"State Of Attraction"(1989) A forgotten cut by the way!!!
Janet Jackson-"Miss You Much" (1989)
Cherelle-"Everything I Miss At Home(1988)
Alexander O' Neal-"Fake"(1987)....Jam/Lewis truly bought the funk on this one
Janet Jackson-"I Get So Lonely"(1997)...Oh my goodness..those synth/keyboard patterns..they run on this one is tiiiight!!!!! This one is my favorite J.J. song and the arrangement/production of Jam and Lewis is a major reason why.

These tracks are just heavier and grittier than the way Reid/Face set up and produce. But every now and then Face will put something out there that I absolutely love and this Karyn White track is one of them.

This song is only one of a few I liked produced by LA & Face. I agree with you BRO915...Jam and Lewis have a style about their producing that appeals to me more...That gritier sound that you mentioned

Other late 80's gems by Jam and Lewis:

New Edition - If It Isn't Love
Morris Day - Fishnet
George Michael - Monkey (Remix)
Janet Jackson - Rhythm Nation
Herp Alpert (w/Janet) - Diamonds
Herp Alpert - Making Love in the Rain
Cherelle - Affair

lol although he is known primarily for his ballads,Babyface can groove to.
