Macy Gray - The Trouble With Being Myself (2003) Macy Gray - The Trouble With Being Myself (2003) OK, I'm wayyyyy late in the game on this one. I just listened to Macy Gray's last LP "The Trouble With Being Myself" and I like it. My favorites are "She Ain't Right For You" (I love the opening music), the organ 'n' angst riddled "My Fondness Childhood Memories," the slow-grind of "Things That Made Me Change," "Jesus For A Day" and "Come Together." Macy's up to her usual off-kilter antics in tracks like "She Don't Write Songs About You": She'll give you good head and she'll make up your bed, but she don't write songs about you. Biting, funny, and straight-up real. The album has this neo-vintage vibe to it. I love the pianos and organs on this record. Her band is doing it. Sounds like she and her producers were digging in some old AM gold crates. I'm still marinating into this LP, but it's a shame it didn't fare better on the charts. I love this album as well as her two previous works 'The Id' and 'On How Life Is'.
Her voice is brilliant.

It's an OK album. A better title would have been "The Trouble With Being Sober".

Aw man, I can't listen to nobody dog fellow Ohio-native Macy!
I LOOOOVE this album...for the first few months I heard it, I would have to say that I loved it but not as much as The Id...but now, I think it's the opposite. Although "Relating to a Psychopath" is the most brilliant aural representation of the manic state I've ever heard... Crickets sing in three-part harmony...
Who has seen her live? I'm sure she's kinda, uh.....sloppy? But I know it would be religious for me. I'm like that with Ms. Macy... No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

Ouch nothin'. Many of us can relate to her because our lives have also been altered by chemical substances...more of us than will admit it, actually.
I'm Rick James, bitch! No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.
