R&B/Jazz Track Of The Day(2/18/04)-Chaka Khan-And The Melody Lingers On(A Night In Tunisia) The super talented Chaka Khan could have easily been a full time jazz vocalist. And in fact she has done a jazz record. And on a few of her R&B albums, she always had some type of jazz backdrop going on on at least one song. On this funky, grooving song she pays tribute to Dizzy, Miles, Max and Coltrane and to the accomplishments of bebop and hard-bop jazz. "And the melody still lingers on" proclaims Khan. This song has some nice chord changes. Produced by Arif Mardin, Khan sounds great on this superb song and Dizzy himself comes in and blows a few chords on this track. This is one of Chaka's greatest musical triumphs. This is from the album What Cha Gonna Do For Me? one of Chaka's greatest records.
P.S. Herbie Hancock lays down an out of this world synth solo on this piece ...as only he can. Enjoy, Brother 9/15

She scats the shit outta that joint in her pre4mance in the roxy back in 81!(which can be found in her DVD Chaka Khan The Ultimate Diva).
Jazz goddess Betty Carter complimented that joint as the BEST modern-jazz # eva "Its really something to hear when someone introduce jazz to the youth with a new sound and approach YET being able to mentain the true jazz's essence. That woman is one notorious wild child!",,,speak on Betty! It sounds fresh to this very day even tho its 22 years old I've alwaysed wanted her to make a JAZZ/FUNK album(with highly respected funk/jazz fusion musicians like Herbie, George Duke, Patrice Rushen, Roy Hargrove, Marcus Miller and etc etc etc). I know she did a standard album "Echos Of An Era" but that shit was waaay too raw(not that its bad by any means but 4 god's sake, it was recorded 4 only ONE WEEK). I want a very WELL-FOCUSED funk/jazz record this time with a line-up of mad musicians(like the one that I listed) it should have a variety of muisic(like a ONE smooth Brazillian jazz #) and stuff like that. Most importantly,,,,let ARIF MARDIEN take the stand. The man can bring out the best in her AND he could provide a very atmosphiric vibe based on nothing but PURE MUSICIANSHIP. Also,,,Clare Fisher's presence would be important(Remember "Ask Rufus"?). She can do that RnB shit in her sleep, we want something WILD this time!
