2 underrated jams from Janet and Rebbie Jackson How come I never see "Diamonds" by Janet from the Herb Alpert album and Rebbie Jackson's "Centipede" on any funk or soul or 80's compilation? I have seen more obscure songs than those on compilations and none of them were as good. I was a fan of Janet once and Diamonds was and is my favorite song from her and old Herb. As for Centipede I don't know how many songs Michael Jackson wrote and produced for other artists but he put it down with Centipede. I got all pumped when Missy Elliott used the beat in "shes a bitch" I thought man Timberland is reaching deep for his beats. Anyone seen these on any compilations?

"Diamonds" can be found on the 2-disc Australian and Japanese versions of Janet's wonderful hits collection Design Of A Decade: 1986-1996. However, it is the "Cool Summer Mix Edit". [This message was edited Thu Feb 12 18:49:22 PST 2004 by VoicesCarry]

I love "Diamonds." That is a jam. I bought the Design of a Decade Import 2-CD set, just to get that song.

"Diamonds" went #1 but i never see the video or hear the song played on the radio (other than Making Love In The Rain). I think Centipede did get it's props but not enuff. Mike's beat on that was comparable 2 "Nasty Girl" funk! Very underrated Michael production. Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

I saw the video to Diamonds twice. Janet's not even in the video. It's cute they way they did it though. They made you think she was in the video

I've got an extended version of "Centipede" on a comp (can't think of the name of it right now). It was one of the main reasons why I bought it.

"I don't know how many songs Michael wrote and produced for others artists" off the top of my head,I can name a few... "Muscles" by Diana Ross (1982) "Nighttime Lover" by LaToya Jackson (1980) "This Had To Be" by the Brothers Johnson (1980) "Behind The Mask (Who Do You Love?)" by Greg Phillinganes (1985) "Eaten Alive" by Diana Ross (1985)

Diamonds is on Jammin' Grooves that came out in 2000. I have it and it's an excellent CD to have.
Centipede is on at least three or four compilations.

I've always been impressed by the fact that MJ wrote it. "Behind the Mask" was a favorite too. Was never a big fan of "Eaten Alive" though.

i'm a serious, serious fan of Herb Alpert (pre-early 80s - I gave up after his 81 work i was so disillusioned), but i had no idea he hooked up with Janet later on. I'm going to have to check this out... Hopefully it won't be as much of a slur on the Tijuana Brass sound as Magic Man.

Co-sign on this one!
I bought Rebbie's last album, Yours Faithfully, primarily because it featured "Centipede". I have Janet's international 2-CD Design of a Decade, and I actually prefer the version of "Diamonds" on that project.

DONT'CHA KNOW...DIAMONDS ARE A GIRL'S BEST FRIEND...
WHEN YA GO, THEY STAY WITH ME UNTIL THE END! ::Minneapolis funk bounce:: There's so many versions of this song. I like the Cool Summer edit the best. The album version's cool also. There's also another version (probably an ultimix) that opens with Marilyn Monroe singing "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend" from one of her old films and turntable flourishes throughout. Classic song. [This message was edited Fri Feb 13 9:17:32 PST 2004 by JANFAN4L]

Didn't she remake "Centipede?" Think it was on her last album.

Actually, Rebbie's last album featured the original version of "Centipede" (with an updated intro and outro).

Re: "updated intro"...does it sound like a lot of (industrial) noise, like factory sounds (it's pretty nondescript noise, don't know how else to describe it)?

"Centipede" was also sampled in Nas' rap smash "You Owe Me" featuring Ginuwine, produced by Timbaland.

Man what the fuck, I thought "You Owe Me" was a cop off "Nasty Girl".

I remember in 1987 when my family was pumpin "Nasty", "Pleasure Principle"... I copped the Herb Alpert album for that and "Making Love In The Rain". I have a Control remix album with Cool Summer remixes of "Nasty" and stuff, but "Diamonds" isn't on there. "She's A Bitch" samples "Centipede" too?
