R&B Classic of the day: "Mama Used To Say" by Junior (1982)

"Mama Used To Say"

(written by Carter/Giscombe)

Said a small boy once asked, when will I grow up?
When will I see what grownups do see
In his fight to come of age,he would have to know the age
to be recognized is when I'm not unmasked

(chorus)
And mama used to say, take your time, young man
Mama used to say, don't you rush to get old
Mama used to say, take it in your stride
Mama used to say, live your life

As the years went rushin' by,he would cut down on his age
He would tell his girl of how it used to be
How his mommy passed away, but these lines she would say
and at the time he couldn't understand

(chorus)
Mama used to say, take your time, young man
Mama used to say, don't you rush to get old
Mama used to say, take it in your stride
Mama used to say, live your life

You're young,so young,don't hold on back
Do all you want to do
Now is the time for you to stride
For you to get better in what you are doing

A small boy once asked, when will I grow up?
when will I see what grownups do see
In his fight to come of age,he would have to know the age
to be recognized is when I'm not unmasked

(chorus)
And mama used to say, take your time, young man
Mama used to say, don't you rush to get old
Mama used to say, take it in your stride
Mama used to say, live your life, live your life, live your life...

yeah, great tune, haven't heard from the guy for years, guess he's out of musicbiz nowadays... I picked up a couple of his albums along the way, but actually "Mama" being the only track with some staying power for me though...

Vanglorious... this is protected by the red, the black, and the green. With a key... sissy!

He did some other great songs throughout the 80s...

***"Too Late"(1982)
***"Unison" (1983)
***"Somebody" (1985)
***"Oh Louise" (1985)

but nothing can really top "Mama Used To Say".That song boasts a bouncy, infectious groove.

I really like this one. I know a cut-n-paste song that mixes the main riff with a verse from The B-Boys "Rock The House".

So it's like **opening bassline and guitar from Junior**

Gorgeous pretty, fine girls
Tourists from around the world
Executives in the business suits
Texans in the cowboy boots

Officials of the government
And those on unemployment
Drive around in limosines
To rock the b-boy scene- Rock The House, y'all

...Somethin like that, i cant verify those lyrics lol

Warren G rhymed over Junior too.

You don't see, what I see
Everyday as Warren G

...See, this is how I learn about songs before my time.

Awesome list! btw, I'm listening to One Way's "Pop It" right now!

As for "Mama Used To Say" that song was the joint. Would you say Junior was a one hit wonder? I remember another song off the same album that got some airplay but it wasn't as big.

headbang "pop whatcha got...pop whatcha got..."

In 1982,Junior had another hit with "Too Late".Subsequent albums had a few more hits (the best was 1983's "Unison"),so I wouldn't necessarily call him a one-hit wonder. But his career peaked too soon.By the late 80s,he was over.
