two other points: 1) voices, you were the one that brought up janet in this thread..not that there is anything wrong with that. 2) not the evita thang again...it still only has a 67% approval on rottentomatoes and the first comment from a critic is as follows: "The problem is that Madonna's performance is all style. She mugs for the camera, but her acting is rarely convincing and her songs are one disappointment after another." -- Steve Rhodes, http://www.rottentomatoes...a-1075265/ and yes she won a golden globe but it was in the comedy/musical category...and can you fathom that she beat frances mcdorment in fargo? considered one of the best performances of all time? that should kill any credibility from maddy's win...and oh yeah, two words: pia zadora

No, she didn't deserve an Oscar nomination (and probably not the Golden Globe, either), but she sure as hell was better than..... 2) Frances McDormand, whose performance in Fargo is one of THE most OVERRATED performances in the history of film. She spends the entire movie walking around acting tired and looking dumpy. Not really a stretch for Frances, there. I never really understood the acclaim that she got for that role (although I understand why the movie itself is so respected). She's been SO much better in countless other films that I just went "huh??". She won the Oscar though, so who really cares? The Golden Globes are a joke. It's the same thing with Diane Keaton in "Something's Got To Give" this year. Here's a shocker: Diane plays herself (a variant of Annie Hall) again, only now she's "rediscovered" by Hollywood primarily because it's been 30 years since her debut and they'd all forgotten about her. Same old schtick nets an Oscar nomination. Pathetic. actually..rottentomatoes compliles *all* critic responces... and funny you mention roger ebert..the most respected film critic you references above...check out ebertandropert.com. you will find in his discussion of Monster as his pick for best actress that he mentions frances mcdormand's performance as one of the all time best performances.... yeah, its all a pathetic shtick...but to use madonna's golden globe win as justification for her talent when her performanced actually recieved mixed reaction, well....its silly. its the whole revision of history thing that fans do...i like madonna probably as much as i enjoy micheal jackson...both fans seem to make up a lot of stuf in justifying their enjoyment.... (that last statement wasnt directed at anyone in particular..) Space for sale...

(that last statement wasnt directed at anyone in particular..) I know what rottentomatoes does, but you only cite one review. Also, because this movie was released in 1996, that 67% fresh rating is based only on about 20 reviews, most of which aren't available online to read (vs. about 100-120 for anything released today). So, no, those are not ALL critic responses. Madonna sucks at acting. She was only reasonably proficient in Evita because it was basically one long music video. I never justified that talent in the least (as I said, her Golden Globe win was ludicrous, but it makes sense in the context of the Hollywood Foreign Press and why the dole out the awards - for publicity and to meet celebrities, basically), but I do think you misrepresented the critical reaction to her performance, which was largely positive. As I said, I'm one of the few who does not 'get' Fargo. So I guess it's just me. I do agree with Ebert about Theron's performance, though. I never saw that one coming. On the whole, I respect his opinion because his reviews are incredibly well written and very reasonable. Because this all boils down to personal taste, no one will ever agree 100% of the time.
