Anybody Here Dig George Duke??

I love the fact that he's a CHAMELEON SPIRIT(Like Herbie but both brothas are different).

LOL I also heard that he doesn't like it when othes call him a JAZZ ARTIST cuz according to him "I'm a limtless artist" and he truely is.

I just took a listen 2 his 78's masterpiece "Reach for it"

This simple example is a testimony that he's not just some another JAZZ keyboardist/pianist but he's like he stated a "LIMITLESS ARTIST".

Any fans??? If so,,lemme know what should I check cuz I'm not that deep about his work.

Holla

Hell yeah I dig George Duke!!! I saw him in concert two summers ago. When he performed Reach For It, we lost our minds, it was so good!

i only know his playing from when he
was with Zappa and I was always impressed

What are these albums like?

Hi there Harlepolis,

to start off things there is quite a great collection (from 1992) that does - however - not cover ALL of my favourite tunes.

Anyway, from his Soul&Funk style albums some of my faves include definitely the slammin' "Follow the Rainbow" (1979) "Guardian of the light" (1983) and of course "Reach for it". (influences by the likes of EWF, P-Funk etc. will make my day anytime LOL).
Oh, and "George Duke" (1986) is maybe worth getting just for the amount of guest stars he recruted like Jeffrey Osborne, Stephanie Mills, Irene Cara, Joyce Kennedy, Kenny Loggins, Deniece Williams, Howard Hewett, Robert Brookins, Dianne Reeves & others

If you also dig Latin/Jazz music then "Brazilian Love Affair" (1979) is definetely the one to get! Recorded in Rio he's working with the likes of Flora Purim, Milton Nascimento and Airto Moreira on this. Classic!

Vanglorious... this is protected by the red, the black, and the green. With a key... sissy!

George did some incredible stuff with Zappa!

Anyone curious about what he's done with him should check out

'You can't do that on stage anymore Vol 1'
very intense, these guys are performing some incredible musical acrobatics!! Especially geroge! thumbs up!

Another one of my fav's is 'Roxy and elsewhere'. They pretty much cover the same material on YCDTOSA but with a huge twist, it's also much rawer.

Probably my absolute favorite is 'The Grand Wazoo' This is a gorgeous album, mostly instrumental. You have to hear george's solo on 'Eat that question' phenomonal! worship

Yeah...George is a great artist...But I have the same problem with him as I do with another George...George Benson...Seems to me as if both of them are on cruise control as of now...Just coasting...not really challenging themselves and thus NOT making challenging music.

His 70's and early 80's work is the best...His 1979 album Brazilian Love Affair is masterful...

Tell ya what? I'll try to go back in the archives and locate that thread I did on that album back in 2002 and revive it.

They're old 4 this shit I guess lol!

Mr.Duke is doing alot of radio-scoring(esp that Tavis Smiley show over LA) and musical-directing award shows(like that BET award). I ask myself, why the hell would you score 4 radio stations when you can do much betta?

As far as Mr.Benson goes, well lol he doesn't feel like he want to impress anybody anymore(check that World Music Award pre4mance if you wanna know what I'm talking about).

They either doing their behind-the-scenes music or just doing gigs over jazz juke joints and what not.

That should tell you that they're getting too old 4 the challenges.
