Sheryl Crow: Madonna Started Style Not Substance Trend

Ignoring the entertainment industry before 1985, Sheryl Crow blames Madonna for women using sex to sell records.

Crow recently said that she believes that the current trend of scantily clad females topping the charts is the fault of Madonna and not because men enjoy seeing scantily clad women.

The singer says, "There's so much TV and so much exposure that a lot of these young girls can become successful overnight. With Madonna kind of ushering in the whole 'sex is power' thing, I think we got off course a little bit."

"There's so much sex. It's about the look and the image, less about the talent. You have to have a good choreographer, good hair. I just find that females really have to sell a little too much of the image and could maybe get more into content."

"Joni Mitchell was sexy - all those women that came out and wrote great songs were sexy, so we have to get back to that."

I think someone should remind Sheryl about her self-styled sexy cowgirl image and cover shoots for Stuff Magazine. Now if Joni had said this I might have taken her a little more seriously. Her songs at least go beyond "I'm gonna soak up the sun..." But even then, Sheryl forgets that using scantily clad women to sell movies or records is nothing new (see: Julie London, Jean Harlow, Marilyn Monroe). Even women with truly superb voices did it (Donna Summer during her heyday).

what's with all the whining? Sheryl Crow has a successful career,so what's she so pissed about? More artists should focus on their OWN careers,and stop trippin' about Britney,Christina and the others.

I never liked Sheryl's voice, or FACE. Sure, looking at these pics, she has a great body and all, but the face is just not pretty. Although it is true that the industry and the masses focus more on the hot chicks, it IS NOT Madonna's fault. Please. There is an influence, sure. But Madonna has proven herself as a creator of great pop melodies. She wouldn't be around for this long if she didn't write good melodies.

What gives Sheryl the right to bitch is that she can back her shit up. She's hot, but she can also write her own songs and play her instruments, so whine away Sheryl!

Yeah, Sheryl Crown did a Stuff magazine shoot about 10 years after her career started, but she can hardly be accused of using sex to sell records.
