Chaka gives Mary J some lessons

From MJB's board:

CHAKA KHAN is so concerned about fellow soul singer MARY J BLIGE's ability to hit the right notes, she's given her a few lectures on correcting her pitch. The I'M EVERY WOMAN singer decided to give her pal a few pointers to get the best out of her voice.

Khan says, "She and I talk about her intonation. She has to pay attention to it. "These girls nowadays are singing flat, and it's like, 'What!' No one seems to care except the people who really appreciate songs sung all in the right key."

Although, great singers such as Daryl Coley have been known to have the same problem.

Daryl goes flat every now and again. Check his live album. Don't get me wrong: I love some Daryl -- his enunciation is pristine. His runs are fluid. But he isn't always on pitch.

I like that. Shows me that he's not just some alien talent, that singing takes work for the great ones, too, not just me.

I feel you, but I think Daryl does that on purpose-that's his style of singing. I don't think it's a matter of him not being able to intonate, I think it's just a matter of choice.

I think Chaka needs to rewatch the tape of her bellowing in 7 different random keys into the microphone during "The Christ" on the Essence awards a few years ago and keep quiet.

I know you love her but she was no where near key during that performance. I believe that she has since admitted a drug problem during that era so maybe that was the problem, but anyone with ears knows that she was not hitting the notes.
