Y'all gotta check these dudes out called Los Amigos Invisibles:

Los Amigos Invisibles is a space-age styled Latin/Funk/Salsa/Bossa Nova/Dance/Electronica/Party band from Venezuela. Most of their music is in Spanish language, but you'll be too busy gettin' down to try and figure out what they're saying. They're on David Byrne's label, Luaka Bop, and they are so cool. I saw them live twice, and they were OFF THA HOOOOOK!!!!!

Their first album, The New Sound of the Venezuelan Gozadera, has cool tracks like Sexy, Mi Linda, Groupie, Ultra Funk, and their hit Ponerte en Cuatro.

Their second album, Arepa 3000: A Venezuelan Journey Into Space is just as good. Also there's more dance numbers and it's more musically eclectic than the first one. Cool tracks include La Vecina, Amor, Mami Te Extrano, Caliente, and the badass jam, Masturbation Session.

Urge OVerkill-"Saturation"-Say what you want about that "Girl You'll Be A Woman Soon" track, but "Saturation" was one oft he best modern rock albums of the early 90's and no one knew about it. These guys were just SO good and it amazes me that they fell by the wayside while shit bands like Bush, Better Than Ezra" and The Toadies got tons of attention.

Sloan-"Navy Blues"- KICK ASS Canadian band. They cop a real 70's vibe on here and the track "Money City Maniacs" is one of the best rock tracks released in the last 10 years, hands down, pants down, whatever!

They were pretty pants sir in my opinion. They just had a lot of hype around them becuz of their name (which I think is pretty cool though). Their singer Cliff (Jones??) was a bit of a goon I seem to recall. On the plus side, they did appoint the girl who lent vocals to some tracks on Primal Scream's 'Screamedelica' album, her name might be Rowetta, Im not sure.

Rowetta did vocals with the Happy Mondays. Denise Johnson sung with the Scream on Screamadelica. And yes, Gay Dad were pish biggrin

Let's see .... I'm thinking of jazz folks, for some reason. Trios, even.

Brad Mehldau and his trio. These cats are fairly wonderful. Brad is one of the wildest pianists I've ever heard. And, his rhythm section keeps up beautifully. They're known for doing really great covers of Radiohead tunes. Contemporary with a few traditionalist leanings.

Medeski, Martin and Wood. Again, great sounds, excellent covers. Again, contemporary with extremely experimental tendencies. Combustication is a great disc.

Jacques Loussier Trio I cannot emphasize the skill and utter mastery with which these men update classical compositions!!!!! If you want to hear these folks without purchasing, go rent "One Night Stand,' the old Snipes-Downey movie on infidelity. In it, you'll hear the trio's version of Bach's "Air on a G-String" (the instrument string, not the article of clothing...) that got me hooked. They're reknown for the Bach interpretations. I was listening to their "Toccata en Fugue" last night, shaking my head. They're monsters. Love those guys.

Others, um. ... Astor Piazzolla, the late great master of tango composition.

Henryk Gorecki, whose classical achievement is probably Symphony No. 3, which he wrote in honor of his wife, a Holocaust victim. A pained work, but beautifully so. I was hipped to this by the movie "Fearless," which employs the music in a stunning way. Love it!!!! But, I understand it's a wildly popular piece, and may not be much of a secret. boxed

That's my short list. I'm sure there's more, just waiting to pop up. Hmm, I'll add a few, but spare you all further ramblings:

Marcus Miller
Lalah Hathaway
The (Jazz) Crusaders
Rachel Lampa
Nichole Nordeman
Dionne Farris
The Sundays
Cree Summer
Rich Mullins
Fred Hammond
Rob Mercer & Friends
Darien Dennis & Ministry of Praise

Junie Morrison Bread Alone

I'm sure most of the funkateers here at the org are hip to him. He was one of the main writers for parliament/funkadelic. He also was a member (keyboard player) of the Ohio players during their westbound years. Junie's playing all of the instruments on the album and has a falsetto, I'm sure most p-funk fans will quickly recognize.

I don't know how Bread alone was slept on but it is a true gem, I stumbled acrossed it in the cut outs, it may now be out of print, though it ain't to hard to find yet. The hightlight of the six tracks is a cut entitled Seaman first class (jock rock) it has a killer bass and keyboard line throughout the song. This album's a must for those not fakin the funk. nod

Oh yeah this is his website, it hasn't been updated in awhile. http://juniemorrison.com/

You can hear samples of this album at amazon.com

No, im sayin this is great music. Thats it

I'm not gonna list music the majority cant understand.. it will just be wasted text.. (check 40% of my indie threads, where most barely go unseen by the "ticker" of who looks at what.) Most are afraid to step out of their ordinary boundaries... That list above is the easy to identify music.. The rest is a step ahead, a la the next level.. The stuff that is a "secret" to most, mainly by lack of information, or something they just cant "get"..

This is a great topic but I don't have my CDs in front of me so it is kind of hard. Then again, the more I think about it my music collection tends to be dominated by music that is rather mainstream. It might not the most popular but it certaintly is stuff most people know of or own here. Anyway one that I can think of that is rather amazing but really didn't sell well at all is

Frank Black "Teenager of the Year". I'm not sure if fans love this one since most people often praise his first solo album and maybe "Cult Of Ray" (neither of which I own) but this one tends to get overlooked. After I heard "Headache" a few times on the excellent 89X and say the goofy video a few times on Alternative Nation, I was hooked but didn't buy the album 'til years later. It's just filled with short pop rock gems. Very smart. I highly recommend it.

Vina, one of the blessings of a horrible job I once had was that I'd often be stuck afterward on late nights/early mornings (in traffic on a bridge tunnel, no less) with my trusty radio. On such a night/morning, I heard public radio's "Hearts of Space," which had devoted an entire program to Piazzolla's music. I'd never heard lusher, darker, more poignant arrangements than that hour. I'd never considered tangoes to be so varied or complex. I've been a fan ever since.

When my boyfriend was introduced to Piazolla's music, he told me about it and described it as similar to the soundtrack of 12 Monkeys. lol It's more than that of course, but I thought that was a great comparison. 12 Monkeys is one of our favorite movies. That's weird, I think my boyfriend used to listen to Hearts Of Space as well. I seem to recall a tape he was listening to in the car one day, (he used to record radio programs like that) and that title sounds familiar. He also used to record DJ mix shows from a local college radio station. Anyway, Piazolla is great dinner music, yet otherworldly at the same time.
