CBS apologizes for Janet Jackson's breast-baring end to halftime show

Sunday, February 01, 2004

NEW YORK (AP) - CBS apologized on Sunday for an unexpectedly R-rated end to its Super Bowl halftime show, when singer Justin Timberlake tore off part of Janet Jackson's top, exposing her breast.

"CBS deeply regrets the incident," spokeswoman Leslie Anne Wade said after the network received several calls about the show. The two singers were performing Rock Your Body, a flirtatious duet to end the halftime show. At the song's finish, Timberlake reached across Jackson's leather gladiator outfit and pulled off the covering to her right breast. The final lyric of the song goes, "Going to have you naked by the end of this song."

The network quickly cut away from the shot and did not mention the incident on the air.

It was unclear whether Timberlake intended to expose Jackson's breast.

Wade said CBS officials attended rehearsals of the halftime show all week, "and there was no indication any such thing would happen. The moment did not conform to CBS' broadcast standards and we would like to apologize to anyone who was offended."

The Super Bowl halftime show, which also featured P-Diddy, Nelly and Kid Rock, was produced by MTV, CBS' corporate cousin in Viacom.

"We were extremely disappointed by elements of the MTV-produced halftime show," said Joe Browne, NFL executive vice-president. "They were totally inconsistent with assurances our office was given about the content of the show.

"It's unlikely that MTV will produce another Super Bowl halftime."

Come on! That's complete bullshit! CBS gave it the okay, and now they're not taking responsibility for it because it stirred things up a bit. That was the friggin' intent of it, to get attention! This is ridiculous! Anyway, go for it, Janet! You looked great!

This CBS apology is not necessary. All I have to say is this, We have daytime commercials that run Victoria's Secret Models with Pasties and Camel Toe in your face for a full minute. This is not new People!

I think the AMERICAN public really needs to deal with a 2 seconds shot of a booby! I have seen much more wrong with air time lately including language and violence that causes much more harm to American Youth, please if this was Europe there would be much more to think about with censorship! Its a shame that CBS has to cover up and play nice.

MTV seems unapologetic and like they're actually promoting what happened (from MTV.com):

Janet Jackson Got Nasty at the MTV-Produced Super Bowl Halftime Show
Jaws across the country hit the carpet at exactly the same time. You know what we're talking about...Janet Jackson, Justin Timberlake and a kinky finale that rocked the Super Bowl to its core. P. Diddy, Kid Rock, & Nelly rounded out the halftime show in the midst of the greatest game on earth. MTV was Super Bowl central, so armchair quarterbacks, fair weather fanatics and fans of Janet Jackson and her pasties were definitely in the right place. So strap on those pads, keep your head down and get the full recap of The AOL Super Bowl XXXVIII Halftime Show produced by MTV.

Of course they're promoting it. Why should they apologize?

If anyone thinks that was "unintentional" they need to find the state of reality and move there immediately. There is no way that was an accident.

Notice that the last shot (timed to the line "I"m gonna have you nekkid by the end of this song" from "Rock Your Body") was about 75 feet away, and it wasn't a jump cut. How many times have you seen those kinds of performances end with a long shot? NEVER, that's when!! They knew it was coming. Also, the entire stage went to black almost immediately; did someone know where the light switch was in case of an emergency?

Bullshit on that!! Don't believe the hype!!!

CBS and MTV are both Viacom companies...everyone was in bed together on this stunt. It's amazing what whores people can be to make some money...showing grinding and naked breasts to little kids throughout the world who waere watching a football game. CBS and MTV and Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake will do anything to make a dollar which is why they are multi-millionaires.

What pisses me off about the whole thing is that everyone involved (Janet, MTV, CBS) is apologizing and playing dumb as if it was not planned. Do they really think the public is that stupid? If you're going to pull a stunt like that, then have the balls to be honest about it afterwards and not blame it on a 'wardrobe malfunction'.

i actually agree with this! i don't think it's anything to cover up...no pun intended, lol. it was a fun, great performance and honestly, if no one made a fuss about the tit, all anyone would be talking about is the dancing. cbs should have just kept quiet about the complaints and let it die.
