Anyway ever since Mariah came out everyone keeps telling me she sounds like Minnie Ripperton, I have to admit I have never heard Minnie sing until today (some bad 80's dance track off kazza) and she has that whistle rigester but she aint all that??
You guys know any good Minnie songs that sounds like Mariah (and not Loving you!)

When people compare Mariah to Minnie, they're really talking about how they sometimes sing in the highest pitches and squiggle their melodies like a sliding synth.

Mariah was probably the first to acknowledge Minnie's influence on her singing style. Mad respect.

Yes, Minnie died in the early 80's from breast cancer. It was the days before they had all of the technology of today where they can save the woman through early detection. I recall that she wanted to hear "Memory Lane" just before she passed away. It gives that song a whole different feeling when you know that. Her daughter Maya is on SNL, she's the one that plays Donatella Versace (which is hilarious).

Mariah credits Minnie (or at least her listening to Minnie) with giving her the idea to even try to sing in the whistle register... so she was a big influence on Mariah.

That doesn't mean they are the same in other stylistic ways.

Regarding her daughter Maya, apparently the song "Loving You" was written about her...towards the end, Minnie ad libs and sings "Maya...Maya " over and over... it's very sweet knowing she's singing to her baby.

On the SNL Mother's day special a few years ago, Maya came on with her father and step-mother and they played a live clip of Minnie singing that and Maya wished her Mom a Happy Mother's Day. It was very touching.

She said because of Minnie she started at 5yrs old to perfect her high octave register (the dog whistle)
